Dubai

My parents are possibly looking at moving back to Dubai after ten years in nj and 2 in istambul turkey. But they have grown very fond of figs. I had one in Dubai when I was a kid I don't remember it doing so well really the only fruit that did well in our yard was royal coconut, bennak, an olive under the eucalyptus and a date Palm and a jujube. I was wondering what gig would do well in Avery hot dry environment? One that I could send with them?

This is just a semi educated guess.......

I would definitely try Joe Morle's  White Triana. It is a good tasting and productive fig and one where the stem holds on so tight to the branch that when harvesting you almost need to use a knife to cut it off. I have seen no other fig tree hold on so tight to its figs like White Triana. They never ever drop off. Black Mission might do well there too.

The desert heat can stress fig trees.  I moved to Arizona from Massachusetts last year.  My fig trees show more signs of heat stress here than in Mass.  What I have observed so far is this: cultivars that are hardy and tough enough to survive borderline cold climates also seem more tough and resilient to the desert heat.  Marseilles VS, Hardy Chicago, and similar figs are strong healthy growers for me here in the desert.  I would stay away from Violette de Bordeaux and other varieties with long slender leaves, because the heat seems to affect them more.  Also, I've been pleasantly surprised by Desert King.  It's my strongest grower here by far.

The best varieties that may do well there are those of the drier climates. Try Barada or some of the Sidnaya, Syria varieties, or similar figs of the dry regions of the Middle east.

These figs I'm guessing should do well there http://youtu.be/yiWPmU3fyZ0

Now guys would it be better to send cuttings or a tree?

I would take anything and everything and just roll the dice.

I don't like to play the what if game, just do it and find out. You might be impressed with the results.

Good luck

I would go with cuttings. I don't know what the regulations are importing to Dubai. If its golf clubs I'll help. Courses are out of this world.

As far as variants, Dubai weather is generally hot and humid with a high daily average of sun hours. So I'm assuming anything that has a closed eye.

I used to play at the Dubai creek myself great course.

Dom I used to play at the Dubai creek myself great course. The Dubai desert classic is fun but the people dress real funny all want to look like Greg Norman.

Bass I guess this is am excuse to get a few more trees for myself. When my folks go I will steal their Turkish figs from their yard.

Rafed I will try them all as you suggested hope it works out.

Joe I will take into consideration the leaf structure of what figs I send them. No stella got ya

Dan I don't have any of those yet so I guess my folks will have to wait for a few for them haha.

I myself rather play golf redneck and hillbilly style.
