dusan's paradiso fig tree

i keep reading about number of different paradiso fig trees. i have gene's paradiso fig tree. i know how to get joe's paradiso fig tree. how do i go about getting dusan's paradiso fig tree or cutting?

Dusan Paradiso is "Bronze Paradiso". Dusan is one of the owners of this variety and he has generously shared cuttings with other fig enthusiasts.

i found few people in canada who are willing to share cuttings, however, not very sure how to send the cuttings. does anyone know if there are any restriction of getting fig tree cuttings from canada to america?

can the person from canada just send it as "gift" and be done with it? at worst the mail will get taken up by the customs, or will the person who sent it get in trouble? i don't want the people who are willing to help me getting into trouble.

Everyone has their own view on it but the cuttings do go back and forth between the hobbyists.
Hobbyists may send you but do not expect this from those who do plants and cuttings for business to send it without phyto-certificate which is not cheap.
Hobbyist may lose their cuttings but business may lose their license without a phyto-certificate.

doing further search on the USDA site, common fig tree (ficus carica) is not on the list of plants that needs permit. that means getting fig cutting is not a big deal on US part.

however, it seems that canadian law is not very clear to me. and everything i read, that phyto-cert is very important even for shipping things out of canada. only thing is i can't find anything on export. most of things on canadian side is about import and there are ton of things that can not be done.

it might be a good idea for me to just drop this. i really don't want the people in canada to get in trouble.

bullet08, I sent several batches of cuttings to Canada last winter with no problems. However US Customs did confiscate the Bronze Paradiso cuttings to me. I think it is hit or miss---most get through without anyone getting in trouble as long as you are an individual as Ottawan stated.

does anyone have this dusan/bronze paradiso in US? if so, anyone willing to share cutting or a small tree? i'm willing to pay for shipping and the cost for the cutting/small tree. please contact me through PM or email at buddawithbeer@gmail.com .

Shipments of plant material TO Canada require a Phytosanitary certificate, but no import permit. Shipments to plant material , including cuttings, FROM Canada to the US require a Phyto and a USDA Post-entry Quarsantine Permit..

Can't speak for other states, but California uses plant-sniffing dogs to check incoming shipments.

What do the dogs try to sniff out?

Pete Im sorry but I dont have any cuttings available this season I did allot of airlayers this year and promised quite a few people cuttings.

Dusan's Paradiso is more than likely Paradiso Nero. Dusan collected cuttings in Italy about 70 kms off the Former Yugoslavian border while touring europe. Cuttings were collected as Paradiso but when the plant grew figs they were dark bronze in colour and thats where the Bronze Paradiso name came into play.

The Bronze Paradiso from Dusan does match the Paradiso Nero on the Ficuscarica.com website and Adriano also believes that it is Paradiso Nero. Its an excellent tasing fig and very productive even throught the rains we had none of the ripening figs split and when temps start to cool down the figs are still very sweet and very flavourfull.

I have sent cuttings to the US 4 out of 5 made it really depends on whos working that day. I would say in another season or two cuttings on the US side will start coming around.

noss,

dogs sniff out lot of things. my wife got stopped at hawaii by a dog because she had banana and pineapple in her huge purse that she carries. some other k-9s are trained to sniff out different things like bombs and narcotic drugs.

nelson,

thank you for the information. i'll see if person in canada that i'm in contact with is willing to send the cuttings and see what happens. last time he mentioned, he had cuttings that he is willing to send out.

Pete thats great to hear hopefully he can send you cuttings. This strain also produces quite a few twin's 2 figs per node.

Aha, so they can be trained to sniff out plants that people try to sneak into, or out of a country.  I'm familiar with the bombs & drugs and even cancer sniffing dogs.
