Hello, we have just arrived back to our little place near the coast of SE France.  Zone 9b I think.  I have a spot for a fig, which is less dry than the rest of the garden, but would like a small fig tree for ease of access as well as maintenance of view!  The nurseries tend to sell basic figs- green (white?) or black.  Probably the ones that do well here (or are easy to get) but seem to become huge.  Would anyone know of european mail-order sources or, better perhaps, a nursery in the region that might have (we are near Cannes)?  Thanks!!

Half of the members of this forum are jealous of your location. You have access to probably the best fig nursery in Europe. Pierre Baud. He is less than a 3 hour drive from you, but he also does mail order. He will give you the best recommendation for your specific location and growing conditions.

That was a good link!  I like the way he has it arranged by varieties for small and large spaces.  I don't speak French, but it's easy to figure it out.  I wish I had known prior to planting which trees grow large.  I know you can keep them small with pruning.  I bookmarked this page.  It's pretty awesome!

I have many of the varieties he mentions, most in the wrong places, now that I read his chart.  :-(

You could keep the trees small with pruning .
Some are naturally dwarf : Dalmatie, Goutte d'or , Madeleine des deux saisons, Pastiliere/Rouge de Bordeaux, Brown turkey.

In Zone 9B, I would be looking for Bourjassotte/Violette de Sollies, Panaché, Marseillaise or any local fig strain that performs well.
I would start looking in the neighborhood to what people already have and see what produces more.
