Early start on Main Crop

Ok heres some pics of my Italian Fig from Colasanti farms this is the Dark I believe have 2 of these but this one is the only one putting on figs at the moment.

This is the other plant I have that is a little smaller

My third colasanti fig that got mauled by my dog.

yes its that broom looking thingie next to the chewed cups

Hi Nelson,
curious did you try replanting that broom stick you call, it still has some decent looking roots on it and should come back eventually perhaps.
That shutlz potting soil i have used as recent as last season in some of my containers .

Hi Martin yes I repot it that plant, its only about 7 Inches long now thos as the dog not only chewed the darn thing but started to pull the bark back with his teeth. There was quite a few bite marks between the roots and soil line but I think it will survive. It went from 3ft tall to 7 Inches what a disapointment

I got a calasanti fig as well. The label doesn't tell you if its a white or a dark fig. however, I emailed the picture of the leaves to calasanti and they said that was the dark one which originated in Sicily, it should be early enough to bear even for Canadian climate.
Good luck with your tree.

Nelson nice looking trees with real good branching. I think with the size of the roots on that damaged fig it will come back strong once it takes.

Sal

Bass the leaves on your plant look like any of these?

Sal, I think the plant will survive I already noticed some of the buds starting to swell just below where I made the cut, hopefully it will recover fine.

I have the "colsanti" Italian fig.  Its a dark fig, small like hardy Chicago or Natalina.  I found the figs very similar to the hardy Chicago and I have heard that it was probably hardy Chicago from others.  When I compared the figs I would agree.

Very sweet and a good producer for me last year.  Total surprise.
Tasty
Nas

Hey Nas I also have a Hardy Chicago from Richters Herbs although the leaves are very similar I dont think they are the same. The main difference I have noticed is that the Colasanti dark when the leaves start to push out of the bud the veins in the leaves are redish and my Hardy chicago is not. Also I have destinct shaped leaves on both plants that I have never seen on my hardy chicago, I will take new pics tomorrow of the leaves im talking about.

Ok here are some update pics.

Difference In Leaves

I have about 6-7 leaves this big the rest are a little smaller

Figs

25 cent coin for comparison

hey, what's up with your goofy quarters?  ;)

i thought i mentioned this before, but i guess not.  the very first picture of the very first fig in this post ... (actually the first couple) looks (leaf type) almost exactly like "Gino's Black"

Jason the flash messed up the moose on the quarter lol or the queen not sure wich side of the quarter it was. I Dont really know what the Gino's black leaves look like this is an Unknown Italian fig Colasanti Farms sell they dont know what variety it is just that it came from Sicily.

Moose?  Who would EVER put a moose on their quarters?  Are you Canadian or something?  ;) ;) ;)

ps- all joking aside, I will take some pictures of my Gino's Black specimens when I arrive home and post pictures in the Gino's Black thread for you to see.

i know, i know!  i was just ribbing you for being Canadian ;)

(i secretly wanted to be a Canadian for a long time, I just can't stand your weather, so Spain is my new paradise-in-waiting)

Remember, the hardy chicago is from Sicily as well.

Time will tell this summer.  I am predicting a good summer for figs!

Nas

Jason love living here cant stand winter, I have been living here 20 years and get winter depression every year.

Nas Im only comparing to my own HC wich for all I know is not even an HC or alive at this point. Main differences I noticed were the bud tips on the Colasanti turned redish over the winter HC was green. When bud broke on Colasanti and started growing leaves every leaf in the beginning had red veins until it reached a certain size then just turned green never noticed that either on my HC. Besides that leaves look allot alike when the figs get ripe I will take pics to compare and possibly Identify what it is.

Hi Nelson,
that plant looks healthy leaves and all.
Please post pictures of ripe fruit when the time comes and dscription of taste.
You get red in veins and they disappear as they grow i read.
Some plant i have do similar VdB, Dark Portuguese and Negretta. My hardy chicago does not that i recall, your leaves have some similar leaves but the other leaves are not displayed on mine HC so although maybe from same region i doubt there the same .
Course you will see soon for yourself.  ; )

I think I am a bit late on this post but I wanted brag that my main crop is bigger then yours Nelson..

Seriously speaking, the greenhouse is making a difference

pictures will fallow soon...

Nelson - see pictures of my Gino's Black seedlings in post #16 of this thread:  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=4269234&pid=39840850#post39840850

Martin I agree some of the leaves on this fig are identical with my Hardy Chicago but the colasanti has too many other variations that I have never seen on my HC, and both my colasantis have the same variations in leaves so It cant just be a coinsidence.

Jason you know what thats the closest variation of leaves I have seen so far, hopefully the figs will ripen by the end of may then it will be somewhat easier to figure what it could possibly be.

I checked my colsanti yesterday and looked for the red on the leaves, but didnt see it.  From what I know, leaves can vary significantly within plants of the same variety.  You can have up to 6 types of leaves on the same variety from what I seen.

My best guess is ripening time, taste and appearance of the figs.  I use the leaf test for last.

Nas I agree only when the figs ripen it will be easier to distinguish what it might be.

Here are some pics I took that kind of show what I meant about the redness in the leaves. Not the best pics but you can kind of see it

The third pic I should of taken of the back where you can actually see the red veins . The redness stops once it reaches a certain size

Thanks for all the work and pics Nelson.

For the record, I hope they are different varieties. That would make it even cooler seeing as I bought my colsanti on a whim at Sheridan nurseries last year for $20.  Didn't even really take care of it.  I left it in its original pure peat potting mix for like two months before I up-potted it into a 2 gallon with pure compost to fill in the space.  Terrible practices, but the darn thing still gave me like 15 figs and they were delicious.
This year I have given it extra TLC and treated it properly so I am expecting a bumper crop.
Cant wait to compare!

No Problem Nas, I know everyone who has it has said they are very sweet but small figs, I bought both plants this year so I have no Idea on what to expect but it seems like a good producer so far and as Bass mentioned earlier seems to be an early variety Ideal for us Canadians. My dad took my darn plant home last night without telling me I nearly had a heart attack this morning when I opened the door and seen it was not here. I will post pics when they start to ripen.
