It was centered quite a ways east of here, close to Calexico, on the US-Mexico border, so it was fairly mellow when it reached here. Each one is different, depending on the earth formation under it. The movement can be side-to-side, up and down, more shaking, more rolling, and duration can vary widely from a few seconds to minutes. The strongest close one, here, was in about 1983-4, 5.3 magnitude, and was really just one huge up and down movement, where you literally came off the furniture, but only lasted 3-4 secs. And, of course, it matters how strong it is and how close you are to the epicenter.
