Ebay Unknown Rooted Purchase

I trust mnedelcu and would buy from him, even if it was a used car.  :)  He's a great guy.

If you guys are into unknowns... I have seen probably over 15 unknown trees in Southbay area of Southern CA. There was this old tree +30 years growing in San Pedro, about 1 mi from the ocean. It produced very large great tasting figs. Outside skin was a dark purple, inside flesh strawberry color. Size of figs slightly bigger then a racket ball. San Pedro has a lot of history with a Croatian and Italian community that settled there over 50 years ago.

I don't know if the guys are into unknowns, but this girl is!

I did receive a nice message from the seller of the one on Ebay that she is shipping tomorrow.  She doesn't spell so well, but she has a knack with growing, and I like that about her, plus she has kids and they like watching the figs grow.

Nullzero, could you take some cuttings from that tree?  And if you do, can I be first on the list?

The fig in San Pedro, going to have to give me some time on tracking down that one. I tasted the fig last year, and I misplaced the written address! I do know what general area it is in. So it will take about 30-45min driving around to track down the home and tree which I remember. I am going to try to do it next week. The good thing about the tree is its branches come over the sidewalk, so I can take some cuttings in the winter.

Here is the google map, street view of two more unknown figs. Breba crop is quite large... it holds lots of fruit over the winter time.

A little update.  The seller thought she was getting paid today, and she can't ship till Wed because she won't have shipping till then.  So she's throwing in tomato and bean seeds.  Hmmmmmmmmmm  Tomatoes grow here in winter, and I bet those beans would love climbing on the vineyard trellis!!

Looking forward to this unknown!!

I have 3 cuttings,all I doing well,don't know want type but,tree are growing fast.

Stephen,

By winter I would be willing to get some of the cuttings from you on the tree/fruit you described.

I may be heading to my grandfathers home town here soon as there are rumors of 70+ year old fig trees growing in the ground.

Chris

i am the seller of this fig tree cutting, as on request of suzi i sent her a fig as well, it should arrive to her friday or saturday, she can take pictures of the fig at least even if its smashed or goes bad in transport. i used to root the cuttings as a child with my father and he showed me how, i can spell for the most part but having a 3 and a half year old son its hard to spell check when i am tending to him while typeing, you can find me at eliteckickkali82012 type that in and you come accross my store

Stefanie,

Welcome to the forum!  I'll post a photo of it's condition when it arrives, and when it grows for a while in the shade.

If you have time to take a photo of the tree, and to take a photo of a fig, then cut that fig in half, and take a photo of that and a leaf, some experts here might be able to identify the variety!  You could also post the photos on Ebay which might get you more buyers!

Glad to see you here!

Suzi

PS, size your photos small like 640 x 480 pixels for this site.  Ebay likes em really big, so you might need a couple sizes for different places.

Welcome Stefanie
Glad mystery is solved.  I don't care if you can spel, lol, keep growing figs.

Ebay "NIPPONDD"
We only sell collectibles, you might guess, we buy/sell Nippon era pocelain

The rooted cutting and beans arrived this afternoon.  They were well packed, and I took pictures.  The cutting was small with a green tip and a few roots.  Stephanie even included a fig!  It was HUGE, and even though not quite ripe it tasted really good!  Ate the whole thing!  I already had a one gallon grow bag with air holes on the sides, filled with my soil mix, and ready to accept my new rooted fig cutting, and I buried it so only the tip is showing.  It will be hard to see in that one gallon pot!  It has an ID tag engraved with the name Stephanie's Unknown.

I walked it out to the vineyard and put it in deep shade under the canopy with a huge Tempranillo cane protecting it from sun.  It will get heat, but not sun.  The mix I use stays damp, but drains quickly.  And I will be very sad if this little precious thing doesn't survive.  that nearly ripe fig was delicious!  I strongly suspect this unknown is Mission.

No leaves for positive id, but first look has an under-ripen Brown Turkey.
