Edible Landscaping( HC and Sal's the same?)

Thanks henry for the tip to call Edible landscaping.  I just called them at their 800 number, I asked if they carried Sal's fig.  They said the Hardy Chicago is Sal's fig.  I don't think so.  The woman claimed that the owner Mike said he no longer calls it Sal's instead he calls it Hardy Chicago because the two types of fig trees are actually one in the same?  I have a Hardy Chicago, does anyone else have any info on this?  Ciao,

I bought a Sal's from Michael at EL about 2001, 50 HC from him in 2003 (and another Sal's).  While they are similar, they are not the same.  Any one fig produces a range of leaf types, HC and S do share similar leaves, but S produces one broad leaf form that is distinct from any that is produced by HC.  The Sal's is much more productive, and better fruit.  HC almost never produces a breba, Sal's produces some.  There was a thread 1-2 years ago on the GW fig forum on this issue.  Herman was able to discribe the differences in their fruit forms.

Note that there were two Sal's figs sold by Belleclare.  The one from EL was one of them, but the other one I think was considered to be THE Sal's fig.  George and Herman might be able to say more.

As I recall there was a post on the forum about this. I think that they are wrong. The Bellclares version as I recall can be traced back to Italy and is the true Sals fig. There are some others here that can clarify that.

Belleclare had two figs they sold as "Sal's".  Apparently there was a typo and some figs that shouldn't have been sold under that name were.  Then, James Robin was selling a Sicilian Black fig with Sal's listed as a synonym.  And Edible Landscaping decided their Sal's wasn't (and maybe at this point it isn't, if they are just propagating from Hardy Chicago).  If you're confused - you've got it right, LOL.
This is just one of the threads discussing this mixup:

This is a quote from Gene in the above thread:
Belleclare had two Sal's figs, one which was the same as the Sal's from EL (which is the one that is shown on Jon's Figs4Fun web page), then a second distinct one. Then there is Robin's Sal which I believe to be a third variety -- but this will be better know in a year or so when people have more experience with Robin's fig.

Soooo, you might want to think of giving Uncle Sal a "Sal's" for his birthday, or next Christmas, LOL.
Hopefully, it will get cleared up a little more than it is now.  I'd like a "real" one at some point too.  I had gotten Mr. Robin's Sicilian Black thinking it was "Sal's".
