El Sals - 4 Ottawan

Hi Akram i read in Hermans post what you mention. Yes your correct about what EL stands for im sorry i took for granted most folks understood but i should be not so lazy and type the full name especially for newer folks joing now .

I agree in my yard to date it is first in production and ripening its fruit every season.
Before i say about taste of it.

Everyone knows our taste for many of us are not the same take for example my santa cruz dark , i just do not care for its taste and cannot see it improve to where i ever would, But - and im sure of this some folks would really say whats a matter with you this fig taste real good if they tasted this type and i would never argue cause we are all different.

My Edible landscaping Sals while the taste is good its slowly fallen down my list of my favorite figs, dont get me wrong its a good tasting fig and is excellent producer in its 30 gallon pot.

I just dont get as excited going to pick a fig off it as much anymore but 1 fantastic thing about this tree in my yard is i know i can depend on it even in not so good cooler seasons it will be there producing its figs which are decent to me and soon one day when im only one eating figs off all the trees this one is good candidate for drying to have some in winter, but i still can eat a whole bunch of figs each day with no side effects like some may have !
Its now about 5th on my list in taste but still number 1 in production for now anyways who knows what the future holds as i still have other types not yet producing.

It may one day i cant predict but may get chopped down to smaller size and grown in smaller container to put another in its place .
Time will tell.

Martin, you say it's # 5.  What are the 4 better ones?  I know vdb and hardy chicago are the top 2.

Defintely
Violet de Bordeaux
Hardy Chicago
Dark Portuguese - very similar to my Hardy Chicago taste
Negretta

Pastiliere - only if it holds its crop but first fig taste was real good to me and along with above names better than sals a very nice looking fig also but has to hold its figs. If it does start holding its figs this type has potential to move to top of list. To see it here fully ripe scroll down to post 22

Im going to get to taste Ronde de Bordeaux soon as there are some getting ripe not sure about this type, it grew faster than any of my plants .
Still more different types to taste next season.

Martin,

Do the figs you like best taste like berries and other fruit more than they taste like figs?

I'm trying to figure out if I'll even like other figs besides the Celestes and BTs.  :)  Won't that be something if I raise some other color/variety figs only to find I don't like them!  If that happens, I'll have some trees for adoption.  LOL!

Man!  I wish we could have gotten to go to Eddie's fruit orchard and taste all those fig varieties he has growing.

Does anyone know how he did with his surgery?  I hope he's doing well.

Noss the VdB to me has a chicago mulberry taste the dark mulberries not the light or red type. Thats the first thing i taste in it. I also like a rich figgy taste as i call it which hardy chicago tastes to me. What i get bored of or dont care so much for is a downright sweet taste that over powers everything else .

Noss its a trial thing you never know if a fig to You and You only taste good if you dont grow it in your space and taste for yourself.
In my opinion one cannot go by what others say simply because they may have different likes and or taste buds.
But from what others say is a starting point a little anyways and does give one idea's so i always listen to all the members and if i see a fig that looks like yuck which i have on many occasions i keep my shut as i was taught when young if you dont have nothing nice to say dont say it at all !!!
But looks ain't everything, especially if she can cook.  ; )
Oh why not try some new ones and if you dont like discard them there may be a Diamond tasting one in the bunch that will really impress you.
