Emergency root prune? Sort of...

All this talk about the storm I'm thinking maybe I better play it safe. I don't think anything will fly away or be washed out where I'm at I can see wind damage breaking branches... I have a bunch of mostly 2nd and third year trees that have rooted into the ground over the summer. I was going to leave them until they go totally dormant then cut the roots. Would it hurt them to cut the roots now to move them inside until the storm passes? Most of them still have atleast half thier leaves and are not really dormant yet.

I did it last year. They ended up just losing their leaves in the garage as the temps kept getting lower inside.  I had a few that were rooted into ground and did just fine when pulled out.

Thanks, I figured they would be ok, I had to pull a few up over the course of last summer. This time they have been rooted into the ground a long time and I wanted to make sure I won't shock the tree or something. I think I might just slip a saw under the pot and cut the roots off all together.

I think digging them before they go dormant is better anyway. The energy of the plant travels down when leaves drop, so if it gets stored in roots outside of the container then it loses it.

Thanks Brent. I did not know that. I guess this morning I will get started.

All done. Some pots had major roots in the ground. I checked the trees after a few hours some leaves are drooping. I hope they are ok.

Make sure to water the pots well.

Yeah, I soaked everything down at the time. I was out there an hour ago. The seem to be ok now.
