If anyone of you orders the Black Ischia or Ischia Black get the AD strain.
I have that strain and it is a very healthy one.
Not knocking the other ones but just saying.

B Mad states that it's presumed to be a seedling from Black Madeira.  Check the Varieties page for images.

Thanks, Rafed! I was actually looking into possibly ordering ischia black but did not know if there was a difference between barnissotte, Nero, and ischia black. I think I will go with your recommendation.rps20140209_125018_122.jpg

Scott,

You won't go wrong. I am very pleased with mine.
And the taste is out of this world.

Check out my thread,

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/ischia-black-070713-update-5885204

BTW,
I don't know about the other names it falls under.
I would go with the B/I "AD" strain first.

The Black Ischia I purchased from Jon (twice - once on ebay, once directly)  is not the same as the BI that is distributed by UCDavis. Jon has said he got the one he sells from a fig collector who calls it 'Black Ischi', or something like that. A very nice fig, more of a VdB type, but not 'the real'  UC Black Ischia. Fig names....

We know from another thread that Richard Watts, another avid fig collector, changed the name of the fig - Black Provence- to Black Ischia because it fit the description, or were 'synonyms' or something, and has sold it as such.  Let the buyer beware. http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/black-ischia-or-provence-6666387

I want to know the answer to Greg's question: "If there are multiple numbers with the same name and you order one of the numbers will Jon substitute with another if that one runs out, or should we order all of them?"

Gina,

You did not say which strain you purchased twice from Jon?
And most of UCD's collection was raised through private donors. Yours could very well be the same as UCD's. Or mine could be same as UCD's. Regardless of what Jon said. Who or how he got his.
That same source he is talking about could be the same source as UCD or vice versa.

Nonetheless,
I am speaking about the strain I have my collection with my own personnel experience with. To my knowledge, the leaves on my BI bare the same resemblance as any other true "Ischia". Whether it be the Black, or the Green or any other.
The leaf formation and the way they tilt from the stem are the characteristics of a true Ischia.

I have provided a link to my thread on post #157 as evidence.

Tylt33, Yep, your are right. Thanks

Why are some varieties listed more than once?

If a variety has more than one stock number, then the cuttings came from more than one tree. In many cases the trees are identical. In those cases, we may substitute depending on availability. Where there are differences, we will advise before substituting.

You need only order one of them.  If that one runs out, one of the other dupes will be substituted for it.

one USDA/UCD Ischia Black growing. it's not too bad as far as growth is concerned, but the other half of the original cutting croaked real quick. Barnisssotte isn't much better. compared to those two, Black Madeira was a piece of cake.

Another question about substitution. I plan to order just 3 varieties-already rooting a bunch and don't want to take on more than I can handle ( that makes me feel like I have the addiction under control ). But I want to be sure I get 3, even if the supply of my first three choices runs out. Would I be able to list a number of acceptable alternatives that Jon could choose from if needed?

Thanks for any advice and clarification!

We're supposed to use the stock numbers (i.e. the "no").  The reference numbers ("ref") are only for Encanto Farms' own internal use.

terms = a dollar down and a dollar a day for 20 years.  I also have lease, lease to own and rental programs.  With approved credit, of course.  Plus, for the first time, I am able to offer a reverse mortgage on fig trees.  Standby for Henry Winkler to provide the details.

Ed, last year Jon said that an alternatives list is ok. I included one with my order and it was filled.
I put a list of alternitives after my order, under the heading "alternitives", organized the same way as the list I am ordering.

Thanks Andy, that's great news.
Instead of the alternative list being organized in numerical order it would be better from my standpoint to list them in order of my preference. Unless Jon tells us otherwise that is how I'll list my alternatives.

Maybe Jon can answer personally on this, but I think listing in order of preference makes it more difficult to fill the order, which is why Jon asks for it to be listed in numerical order.  If your alternate list is also in numerical order, then after he goes through your primary list, he can go through the alternate list to fill how ever many was missed from the primary.

Consider that your primary list has several that could not be filled due to high demand, so that he had to take many from your alternate that was not in numerical order.  It would make your order much harder to fill and could result in it being delayed.

Do we know how many of each variety we will be getting? If it's $8 each cutting and we get three of each x the 150 varieties I want, that could get expensive.

I think the final instructions will tell us, probably coded something like A = x pieces for y dollars, B = q pieces for r dollars, etc.  I think that will mean that, for example, if you order a variety V that is listed at $6 for 3 cuttings, you would give him $6 and in return get 3 cuttings that cost $2 apiece for a total of $6.  Don't know for sure, though.

I read a thread from a ways back (2010) where a person had mis-ordered because this issue wasn't clear in the instructions.  Pitangadiego said he'd clarify it in the future, so I presume it's clear nowadays.  (this will be my first time ordering)

Does it matter if we get our order in tonight versus tomorrow morning?  Just wondering if sacrificing sleep will be for a greater goal or just a loss.  I noticed last year that Jon said the first several days of orders counted the same time wise.
