Encanto Fig

Good day, before Jon and I went to UC Davis last month, I questioned a fig that I purchased from Bass years call.  It was miss labeled and as it turned out the seller sold me a seedling called Encanto.  My tree is a beautiful tree.  This year I placed it in my orchard.  The birds got every fig and I did not get a chance to taste one!  But I did last year and the figs were good.  Well, during our trip to UC Davis, Jon brought me a few ripe Encanto figs.  I was so amazed how large they were!  And they taste just like sweet mulberries!!!!

Here are a few picture of those Jon sent me!  Martin, this is a good one to get!

Dennis!  You are making my UCDavis cutting list for 2013 grow very long!  Looks amazing, and since I've never tasted a mulberry, looking forward to tasting it!

I thought it was named after Encanto Farms, no?

Curious what the leaves look like.  The coloring looks a lot like my Negronne (breba and main), with resemblance to Vista, Petite Negri, Violette de Bordeaux, etc.

It is a seedling of Vista. In the early years is looked a lot like Vista, but as it has finally matured, it has turned into a larger, pendant-like fig of stunning beauty. It is sweet and juicy, but not as jammy as other figs. The can be 3+ inches long. Birds do love them. Very vigorous grower with fruit ripening well into fall where is it warm enough. It is named for my neighborhood, Encanto.

Cool Jon!  I thought this was of your doing.

UC Davis has it from you, right, and I don't need to wait until 2013 to get that order in!  I can come down in Feb and get my cuttings from you!  YAY!!

It is at USDA/UC Davis because it is a seedling of Vista. It is the only tree in the collection, as far as I know, that is directly descended from another tree in the collection, which gives it some unique qualities when looking at genetics of figs.

See Encanto  Note that it is also NOT available from USDA/UC Davis at this time.  If they are successful in getting the new orchard block planted this Fall, that may change.

So how early does it start?  Is there a breba crop?  What's it like?  Small eye?  How does rain affect it?

Jon, I got a few cuttings that struck a few weeks ago and I look forward to seeing them grow into trees next year. I really like the flavor of Encanto figs.

Bob,

No Breba that I know of. I had fruit this year by mid August. Eye. What is rain?
