end of the season for me..

been sick for last 3 days..  tummy virus i think. now every joint in my body hurts like.. hmm.. it hurts.

anyway, i just went outside to see how my trees are doing. i think the season has ended. i don't mind ants, and i don't mind spiders. but i completely refuse to eat house flies.

it's been raining for last 3 day and my figs are all spoiled and covered with flies. so.. i guess this is the end of 2012 fig season for me. all that's left to do is wait for the trees to drop leaves and pack them away when the temp drops.

enjoyed the figs a lot this year.. too bad about the darn rain. it would have been great if we didn't get so much rain. the season might have been extended for few more weeks. oh well.. "that's how the cookie crumbles".. <- i hate that saying..

Pete, sorry to hear you aren't feeling well.  Too bad about your figs.  Next year will be better!

Get well soon!

Pete,
We're getting light rain right now, but it's supposed to get heavy. I'm considering picking a few figs now that aren't fully ripe rather than lose them to the rain. Also the birds are getting enarly every Sal's Corleone before it's fully ripe and I'm getting frustrated as I suppose you are too

Hey Pete, don't complain about the rain too much. Yes the figs are delicious but we are in a "exceptional" drought and we are 10 inches below normal for the year. I would take the excess rain over none. Just sayin

well.. like the old saying goes.. can't win either way. i'll be darned if it rains and i'll be darned if it doesn't. i remember few years ago when we had such a drought that we were not allowed to water our trees and plants. sorry to hear you guys are not getting enough.

Bullet,
I am in a similar boat. Picked my last Celeste today, and we got 3.3 inches of rain in the last 24 hours.

There is always cuttings, and next year to look forward to.

Rain, and high winds have just about finished off my fig season here in The Bronx, NYC.  Figs are starting to get water damaged.

There's always next year.  : )

Frank

Sorry to hear your fig seasons are over. Is this happening earlier than usual in the east?

Picked the very first Blanca de Maella today, in spite of being a little early and with the rain it was excellent. Also picked the last 2 Bisirri Dark, also excellent. Then the rain came down in torrents, I'm pretty sure most of what is left is toast, or more accurately exploded or near to it.

Pete
I hope you get better soon.
Are you sure it is virus?
May be you ended the season with eating too many figs followed by a glass or two of water. That might sometimes give you tummy virus like symptoms.

Pete, sorry to hear you are not feeling well.  Next year, figs will be more productive then this year so you will have a lot to look forward to!

i'm sure it was virus.. on tues night, all my joints started to hurt and i couldn't move at all. i was in bed all day yesterday. back to work now.. can't stay home too long.

it's only mid sept.. last year, i had figs until early nov. so.. i think it's little early for the end of season for nc at least. but other than the weather, all the figs are about done. i don't see too many left on the tree and with this rain, most of them are spoiled. Kathleen's Black still have about 10 green figs on them. maybe if the weather holds out, i might get few of those.. but i see temp dropping soon here. next 5 days looks like high 70's.

@Womack where are you located?

Sick is no fun Bullet grrr.
Trees here know whats coming many yellow leaves and rust , and its 39 out as i type this.

Martin, what is your key to move your plants inside? Certain temp, when the leaves fall off or convenience?

Anyone

i move my older plants into my garage when the night temp drops to 35-40. the younger trees go into garage around 40-45. if the temp during the day is high, i might bring them out again for the daytime.

Newnandawg,

I am north of Rome

I have 3 figs on a young Preto that I'm praying will ripen before it gets too cold. Still have many on my Sal's Corleone and a couple others hanging on. This has been my most productive year and I'm not quite ready for it to end, gotta taste those Pretos, then it can end!
