Enjoying Figs in The Winter

Hi Everyone,

Today the good wife and I went to the farmers market
and I picked up some dried figs and fig preserves.
The dried figs are from Turkey and the preserves are from Croatia.
See if they are in your area and enjoy!!

We have the jar which is pictured in your fourth picture.

It says it is Adriatic fig preserve.  It is VERY good!

Hi, we have similar dry fig package that says kalamata dry figs, also i see a jar at the market store also similar to yours posted but i forget what type its about 4 or 5 dollars for the jar.
I did buy several packs of dry figs last season some were decent but some not so good in my area.

I too had the Adriatic fig spread...it didn't last long. It was SO GOOD!
Found it at World Market.
Sue

In picture #3 is the fig/orange spread.
I didn't think I would like it couse I don't like
orange spread, but it is just as good!

We were at grocery store today and i have been seeing these preserves each time we go there but never bought a jar.
Well today i broke down and purchased 1 i also saw the orange one there also but im not a fan of something mixed with orange.
On jar it says product of USA , also on lid made with imported adriatic figs.
I guess this is a green fig? Im holding jar to light and can see little chunks in there as well, the color is maybe caramel color? Well soon enough i will open and taste. Cost was 4.99 for 8.5 ounce and has figs, sugar, citric acid, pectin, lactic acid and ascorbic acid in that order.
Soon enough i make my own with dark colored figs i hope , oh i refused to buy the kalamata dry figs as last time some were good some were lousy , nothing like drying your own !

Good for you Diesler!!
It is a little pricey, but well worth it.
It's $5.90 Canadian plus tax, so about $6.25 per jar.
And do try the orange/fig preserve also.
It is very good!!

Jerry

OK here is my personal experience today with the jar of fig preserves.
Now its just me as i know everyone has different tastes thats why i say My Personal.
Well i went to open jar and at first i could not said to myself ya right not many lids i could not take off in my time (Man Law Thing) so i gave it another whirl and really bore down on that lid saying to myself if anything i might end up with the top half glass piece in my hand ......LID NOT BUDGEING
Then i said must be the fancy wrap on jar so i peeled it and of course now the lid is all sticky and i mean sticky. Well Man Law dictated grab it and now take off the darn lid and then wash the sticky stuff off your hands No Big Deal !
Um nope darn lid would not budge!!!
Now im gwetting my feelings hurt , shoot the kids and the misses always bring me jars to open and i never fail , i buy something to try and i cant get the dang blasted lid off.
Si last resort i did what i used to see my wife do until one day i said just give me the jar and i will open it , i used the biggest metal spoon i could fine and banged away ( not Man Law) .
Darn thing opened.
I took a butter knife and swirled it in there and i wish i could of had someone take my picture and posted it here when i did that you all would have had a good laugh!
For me personally the stuff is horrible!!!
You know what it taste like?
Like someone got those yucky Fig Newton cookie things and ground them up in a blender and added sugar water.
Let me say at least to me i will never ever buy fig preserves again, and NO the stuff was not spoiled  just not to my likeing.
I have tasted homemade fig preserves before and they were goos this stuff not so unfortuntely or maybe thats a good thing at 5 bucks a crack i will make my own this season or next depending on my own fig crop and leave it at that.
So thats my experinece and im sure others like it and perhaps a few do not like i mentioned at the beginning everyone is different.

Ok, you got the Dalmatia fig spread.  I got Adriatic a few weeks back, but still haven't tried it.  I have a feeling it may have a more "berry" like flavor.

Jason,
post your take on it when you taste it.
I have a feeling though for me anyways i wont be buying anymore as i think the adriatic fig types are the light colored figs but not positive which i dont have a taste for in anyform.
But im always curious to hear how others enjoy or not the taste of different figs and such. But i do try to keep an open mind about them white figs.

The Adriatic jam I had was a deep, deep red jam. It was sweet and very figgy tasting. I thought it was excellent tasting. It didn't make it to the 3rd day. :-) Mine was a product of the middle east...forget the country it came from but it was not made in the USA.

Sue thanks for the information as yours sounds much different than mine which had a caramel color only and had a nasty taste .
Oh well i learned at least what not to buy , since i should have more than enough to consume fresh i will start making my own with my dark figs and hopefully i will like it.
