Have any done an espalier with young figs?  I would like to see some pictures. I need to do a lecture on soil management for a horticultural class and I made the mistake of mentioning the fig hobby.

Jack...I did a type of espalier called a "Belgian Fence" last growing season(no pics, but I posted a video of it here last Nov.)...unfortunately with the very cold arctic blast that hit our state back in late January, all ten of the fig trees that were a part of the espalier suffered quite a bit of dieback, but the root ball was still alive...so last Saturday I dug all 10 trees out of the ground and replanted them in 5gal. pots...after pruning back all the dead wood, I was left with ten 12" tall potted fig trees (ten different varieties--5 dark, and 5 light)...so all is not lost, as each tree is starting to break bud and leaf out.

I will be planting several 1 year old plants in ground within the week, and will be posting my Espalier Training progress. Due to the heavy and frequent thunder showers today, I have had to delay planting.

No. The only figs planted in ground was the one posted. All the figs in 5 gallon buckets are outside and leafing out waiting to be planted. I expect frost this Monday night if the sky is clear. Last frost is historically the last week in May.
Please start a new Topic with pictures of your progress. It would be interesting to see before, during and after pictures.

Did you get anything planted yet Pete?  I got some of mine in the ground last weekend but now I wish I had waited until the coming week with the risk of frost coming up.  I will get some pictures up in a couple weeks when they are really growing, I just put t-posts every 3-4 feet and then used chain link fence bottom wire through the holes to make my anchor wire for the branches.
