Ever hear of a fig called Hoboken (or know of any figs from Hudson County NJ area)?

HI everyone,

I had received from a forum friend a fig called Hoboken. It interested me because my Italian side of my family all migrated to Hudson County NJ when they got off the boat from Italy and some of my family went to live in Hoboken.
I know many Italian families brought over fig trees with them when they migrated here just like my family did.

I am still in the search for my family's fig tree that came from the Salerno region. I was a child then, so propagating was never a thought. Now I look back, I wish I knew what I know now (although I did save some seeds from one of the figs when I was younger, the seeds are probably 20 years old now. If anyone is interested in experimenting with germination, please let me know).

So, knowing the variety Hoboken originated from Hoboken, there is a good chance it was an Italian variety, and I am always looking at the Italian varieties hoping one day I could recognize my family's fig.

Anyway, It figures, the one Hoboken I had died, so I do not even have Hoboken anymore and did not have a chance to taste it.
Yet, I still am looking for info about it just because it was from one of the same towns some of my family originally migrated to and I am always interested in any figs that originated in Hudson County, NJ and/or the Salerno Region of Italy. And maybe I will be able to find the variety again.

So if anyone knows anything about this variety, or any other Italian varieties that originated from Hudson County let me know. Thanks! Christy

Hi Christy, the fig that I have from Hoboken is in the Mount Aetna family and one of the best in that group, it's purple, red inside, thin skin, I have two planted outside in the yard, Sergio in South Jersey.

I have never heard of a fig called "Hoboken".
But I know that the famous Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, NJ.

George, I don't believe that there is one, someone might have just labeled it such, it could be any fig.

@ Christy
Part of your fig wish-list is "... anything of Italian origin" .
Be very careful what you wish for; you may end up with much, much more than you can handle...

Hi Sergio,

Can you tell me the name of the fig you have so I can keep a look out for it?

Ok, George, maybe I will remove that, I should probably be more specific, and put "of the Salerno region"

Hi Christy, I do not Know the name of it, I would have to ask my mother's neighbor in Hoboken the next
time I go up, they chopped it up pretty hard this year, they got too tall for them to pick. It's about 6 blocks North East from where Sinatra was raised. If you follow the thread on this forum you will understand the meaning of Mount Aetna figs, but I think you already know.
