Is Excel really that good? It must be one of those finicky, very climatic dependent ones for developing good flavor as Gene in DC did not have good results. But NC is not far away and I saw another VA report that it has good flavor.
Is this the same Excel cultivar we are speaking of? I have had it grown in VA--did not taste good. If same cultivar, what would you imagine in NC is the key to allowing such good flavor development? Hotter summers than us perhaps? I can't imagine you get much less rain in NC unless you are doing controlled potted growing (dragging in/covering when it pours) or you're in ground in a special microclimate?
