Exciting arival from Italia :) "Barbara & Marcos Fig"

Thank you Shailesh, I try to bring the best in figs :)

Nice looking plants.  I like the very round leaves.

Thanks for bumping this thread. I agree, these are lovely. We need an update.

Aaron I think you've officially earned the "Indiana Jones" hat for fig hunting !! Great looking leaf and fig. Looking forward to hearing more about the history and or name of this variety. Looks like a strong grower.

@Sharon, @Dale, I agree those leaves are pretty as they are nicely roused, but , as you will see in next post, they change as the further leaves open up , specially under full sun. I don't know why...

@Pat, LOL I think I might need one of those stylish hats, not for the fame but to protect me from sunburn. They are strong growers with minimal of not non of FMV.

After spending some time with Barbara, ( we visited the premises of a fellow Bonsai collector who recently passed away), we went back to Barbara & Marco's house and I took some pictures of the mother tree for Update. She promised to dig out some old information regarding this variety, even if it meant to contacting back to Italy...so, I am excited about her act of devotion to this Fig.
As you see in the pics, Marcos shows no mercy when it comes to trimming the fig trees! LOL
They were complaining about the birds this year and I suggested the Organza Bags to Barbara...it made sense to them.

How exciting - possibly getting history on this tree! It's one beautifully healthy looking tree.

Devotion , that word really sums it all up when growing fig trees!

Gotta love those organza bags, they really work.

Carry on "Indy"!!

Aaron!   You got fig fever!!!!

Nice looking trees!  I assume that's a lemon tree behind the fig tree or are those figs on the left and center of the second photo?  Please put me on the list for cuttings next time they want to prune it.   :)

@Denns, I'll let my wife know the name of my sickness, b/c sometimes, she tells me "I'M SICK!".  Thanks...LOL

@Bob, those are yellow figs in the back... (kidding)
...and , yes, I am on top of that last comment. I have an agreement with Barbara.

I received a pleasant phone call today as I was coming home from my lecture.
It was Barbara, wanting to inform me that the Italian figs were ripening and that she had prepared a care package for us ...
So, I arrived at here place and she was waiting for me with a smile... in her hands was this...
She had prepared a potpourri of fruit basket from their Italian Garden backyard...

Lemons, Oranges, Cumquats and My favorite Legendary Italian figs...the same fig that's been in Marco's family for more than 60 years...

"but wait" , I said, "what's this dark fig?" ...she smiled and said..."that's another story ;)"
"you would have to come back for that story someday" she added with a smile.

"But now, lets go to the backyard, I want you to see something", she said.

I, carefully removed the organza bag and let the overripe fig hang there freely for a moment.
It was a beautiful scene. My first time ever seeing such a memorable, picture perfect setup.
There were at least 4 stages of ripening on tip of the branch, right in front of my eyes...and look at the honey dripping from the overripe fig...

I had never had anything as sweet and aromatic as those Heavenly Morsels in the plate.
Pure pleasure in a single bit.

@ Aaron
my friend if this is what you like, i think you should come to greece in august...
great pictures!!!

That overripe fig is at a delicious stage of ripeness it seems. I love kumquats, my favorite citrus to eat out of hand.

Mike from Hanover, VA

Wow, I'm getting zone envy big time!  Thanks for posting the photos of this fig - keep them coming!

Fig porno from the fig jedi! Good job Aaron, thanks.

@andreas, you just tapped into my dream issue, lol
one day...

Thanks everyone, i'm so glad you all are enjoying what I bring in.

I am so excited,
today I got an invitation from Barbara and Marcos to help trimming his old Italian tree. Check the posts #35 and #40 for detailed pics.
I am so honored , off I go...wish me luck !!! :)

Good hacking Aaron ! Be gentle!

Good luck, I am envious.

Have fun.

Hey Aaron get a lot of cuttings and don't forget me.
Vito

Wow that looks amazing.  Please keep me in mind if you get any extra cuttings.

Aaron, those are special figs, hope they get spread around if you get enough. I know you will have them rooted in no time.

Mike in Hanover, VA

Good luck, hope you get many.

Very nice.....now that's a fig I would like to have

SO, I go there to discover that he had trimmed them already.
So sorry everybody that I won't be able to distribute this particular one at this time... He gave me the honor of cutting the last 3-4 branches offf of the younger bush and keep good cuttings (which came to 5-6 cuttings of 3 nodes each) maybe I'll use Charley's "Single Node" method, then more of us can have ...?  ;)
But , anyhow...I got to get to know them better and took few photos of the place and his setup, so here it goes.

Her's Barbara and Marcos in front of the Main Green Fig which was heavily trimmed already. And by heavily I mean HEAVILY!!! LOL
On the left is the tree (old pic) that was at the end of last summer, on the right Marcos and Barbara are standing in front of the same tree which was heavily trimmed.Marcos shows NO MERCY when it comes to pruning his figs.

"I'm from Bari, which is on Adriatic side of Italy, of Apulia region" said Marcos proudly..."these green figs are from Naples, which is on Tyrrhenian Sea at East side of Mediterranean. Next time I'll take you to my father's fig trees, from Bari, he brought them 60+ years ago with him to US, (Glendale). There are greens and blacks" he added.

Marcos was showing me how they utilize all the Sunset line for the fig trees
"Figs need long, sunny days in order to become ideal. It's a delicious treat which needs a lot of care, but at the end, it's worth it" he said smilingly.

He uses gentle irrigation system instead of drip or sprinklers to water the figs.
Notice how sandy, dry and rocky the place is. He says it's ideal for the figs.
In this area Marcos wants to plant few of my "Burbank and Vineland Fig" , he really liked them.
