Exclusive Variety Section for Growing Tips, etc.

I wish that there was a way to have a special section for individual varieties.  For example...I just bought a "Hardy Chicago" and want to know everything about it, where it will grow best, souring/splitting characteristics, etc.  I go to the section marked: "Hardy Chicago" and click.  On the screen I can read everyone's comments on this variety, and ONLY this variety.  Same with "Atreano"..."Stella" etc.  Comments and growing suggestions can be added by forum members.  It would be "cultural/variety file" for each popular, NAMED variety.  No unknown, or, unidentified varieties.

The only thread that comes close to this, is the "Best Figs for Your Location" section, but, too much reading, and postings are too random.  It's not quick, nor specific.  It just tells you which figs will do best where you live, but no cultural specifics.  Yes, you can do a search for a variety, but that often times, doesn't give you anything useful.  Again, too much reading.

Just a thought.

You can always look up individual varieties on Jon's list of figs at Encanto Farms, or Google.  Jon doesn't have them all, but he mostly posts a leaf and/or a fig photo, and a description of the fig and flavor.  I wish he had them all, and I'm sure he does too, but so many unknown varieties out there, and known but rare, it's hard for one place to list them all.

It would be nice if he had a "Grows Best in Zones" area, so you could find your location, and see what is recommended.

You are right.  Some of the forums here are so long it's hard to sort through them all.  A nice chart would be great!  How many varieties are there?  How many with 3 or more AKA names?  AKA=Also known as....  There are hundreds of varieties.  This would be a tough task.

You know where that would get seriously dicked up, Frank?  When people who have mislabeled varieties posting invalid comments about a certain type of fig they don't actually have.

There are threads about certain varieties - for example, Gino's Black.  If you hit the search feature, enter a fig name in the search term box provided, and choose "Subject Only" from the dropdown, you can see whether there are dedicated threads on a fig.  That's similar to what you are requesting, I think?  (dedicated threads)

Oh!  I have an idea!  Start a Ideal Figs for Zone 4.  One for each zone, and you can only post in the thread if you live in that zone thread, and then one for zone 5, then zone 6....  Talk about board clutter.....

I guess you are right after all.  I get tired reading through all the threads when searching for just some specific information about one variety.  Doing the search thing will bring up threads revolving around one variety, but often they are also filled with too much useless chit-chat, and frequently go off subject.

But the problem with mislabeled varieties and too many names for the same figs will be, at some point, confusing.  Jon's listings are useful for identification, but cultural tips are not the purpose of that service.

The "Grows Best in Zones" almost comes close, and would be better if it was divided into specific sections and climates...for example: best fig varieties for: Pacific North-West...for: Deep-South-Hot-Humid Areas....etc.  I live in NYC.  I could just click on the section labeled: Figs for Short-Season, North-East Areas.  Then members can make recommendations, and comments for those very specific areas.  Oh well....

It was just one of my thoughts that should have been thought out more thoughtfully...I think.

Thanks,

Frank

That's an excellent suggestion.

Also, in the future, grouping figs together that look and taste the same would be good.   I know that each fig shows some other names for each fig, but it would also be nice to have some kind of grouping of similar figs by taste, color, etc.  Probably would take some work but with technology these days, someone smarter than me could probably set up a google shared app to have various members categorize the figs.
