I recently bought one of those expandable garden hoses that are advertized on TV.  It worked very well for about 15 minutes.  Then the blow-outs and leaks started.  I bought a hose repair kit at the hardware store, and made the aggravating repair.  The hose again worked for three days, before springing another leak.  Since both leaks were within four feet of the end that screws onto the outside hose faucet, on the side of my house, I will now cut off all the weak, and repaired sections of hose, splice on a new hose-end fitting, and hope for the best.

The next step is to throw away the crappy hose.  More of my money wasted on TV gimmicks!  Will I ever learn?

I should've known better....no one of this forum has posted any recommendations for these hoses.  I should have asked why.  Now I know.

Frank which one did you buy? I've watched a lot of YouTube reviews on them and they all claim the "pocket hose" brand is the best. That's the green one. It actually got a good rating whereas all the other brands some of which are also green, get terrible reviews.

Hmmm...I bought one a couple of months ago and was so happy with it, I just bought one of the new ultras which I haven't even unpacked yet, but I've been giving the regular "Pocket Hose" (I purchased both of mine at Home Depot) a good workout over the past 8 weeks, or so.

I do notice that the ends do appear to leak at the fittings UNTIL the hose is fully expanded.  Once expanded, it seems fine.

That being said, both of mine have the plastic fittings and I've seen a newer one advertised with metal fittings that I would anticipate would last much longer than the plastic.  I imagine it won't be much time until the fittings break entirely, but I believe there's some sort of lifetime warranty on it (although, I never keep those receipts!).

I usually just buy the ones from the hardware store that are resistant to kinking, they still will kink not too bad either, but generally I don't get blow outs either.  If you get some of the thicker ones they tend to be better.

Frank, those hoses are terrible, we bought when they were offering 2 for price of one on line, both went bad just like yours within 2 months. It's a total loss. Some one should sue them, LOL

I was REALLY pleased with our two expandable hoses, until I over tightened the connection and broke the plastic connector. Until yesterday, I REALLY liked them, and still like the one that works, just doesn't stretch as far as I want. Got the old standby in use today. I've had this one for many years, brass fittings and all.

I have one, so far so good.... I pressure washed the house with it

Mine virtually exploded the first time I used it. Was from Home depot.

The wife bought a pocket hose last year. It didn't burst until the second use.

The one that looks like it is made out of a skrunchie is terrible, there is a different one that I got and it worked so well I got a second one, they have it at Ollies for 14$ It comes in different colors, here it is on Amazon but don't get it there as I said it is 14.99 at Ollies

I bought the 100ft. green covered Pocket Hose.  I actually LOVE the concept of this hose.  It's very convenient to store and use.  However the materials used to make these hoses must cost pennies and the quality of the interior latex hose must be quite inferior.  The woven covering protects, and also limits the expansion of the long balloon-like latex interior hose.  The side walls of this hose are probably very weak, or, easily damaged.  Water pressure blows out the walls if the hose gets kinked or is stored in a tangled heap.

I loved using the hose and was thrilled to see it collapse into a small pile after use.  Then came the leaks, and subsequent aggravation.  I wish someone would make a high-quality version of this expandable hose.  The only one that comes close to kink proof is the Flexzilla 0412....but it's expensive, and it's still just a high quality a hose that doesn't expand or, collapse.

Caveat Emptor with the Pocket Hose.  Great concept....cheap quality.

Well, with 1.5 acres, we just use commercial hoses.  They cost more, but they work.  We did try that thing you bought, but it got into the trash a while ago.  Mostly we water with a drip system.  That doesn't cover everything, so I use a hose where drip doesn't work.  We have about 5 commercial hoses with nice nozzels going to places where the drip doesn't go. 

You just have to do what works best for your property.  We are not all in the same boat for sure.

They make those commercials look so enticing. I wanted to buy one too. They advertise them as lightweight non kink etc etc... They have cars rolling over them and everything.
The only thing that can destroy these thing are like King Kong or Godzilla. I'm truly sorry you lost your money Frank but thanks for letting the rest of us know and keep us for falling for another stupid TV scam.

I've had it with spending money on gamble products. Time for the drip system.
And for the one gallon pots, which are grouped in my newly build little terraces, I am making a rain system with a handle pul. it's manual watering but all at once. A friend of mine gave me the idea.

Just to add to this...I have purchased 4 of these and the third one just failed. That was after only about 3 weeks of use. So far no repair techniques have worked. These were the green ones from Home Depot. They are total junk.

I bought 2 of those green 1 year ago, They broken in 7 days, They are total junk. not sure the new design one better or not.

My uncle bought one too and it failed after a couple of weeks.

I bought one on Amazin with a very good rating. The key is 1) the fittings must be of metalQ and, 2) dont leave the water on so that pressure doesnt burst it.

I have had mine for several months. Love it & will buy another soon.

I have 2 "Pocket Hose" brand.  One of mine burst after 2 months or so, but they honored their warranty and sent me a replacement totally free of charge. It took about 2-3 weeks to get the replacement in. 

I was in HD a little while back, and I heard the manager of the garden area talking to another employee. She was saying that the expandable hose that they sell had an almost 90% return rate (her words).

Wonder why they still carry them then......

I have four of them. Love these hoses. I got mine dirt cheap on sale. I have the ones with the plastic fittings and they are working fine after about two years use. I always empty them out after every use and store them in my heated garage during winter.

I think as JohnnyD said, you need to empty them and store them inside.  I have purchased three of the green ones from Home Depot and the first one exploded after a year.  It was left outside for most of its life but was always empty.  The last two were purchased later and are still working (they get used almost every day) but they have developed leaks in the middle and will probably explode in the future.  They are a great idea but too fragile in real world use.
