Expanding fig collection

Well I tried to limit myself to 5 figs total for my container collection (find myself going over that number now). I decided to give away a kadota fig to a friend to free up space for another variety. I am trying to keep the top tier figs in taste and production in the collection, goal now is not to go over 10... Lol

So far I have a Vista, Bruinswick, LSU Gold, Dark Portuguese, and a MARSEILLES vs Black cuttings on the way. Now my question is what great figs am I missing? I am trying to add ones that have diverse tastes and similarities that don't overlap what I already have. I am interested in extending harvest, ones with great brebas, or ones with unique taste and great production.

Thanks for any of input!

Well Nulzero, being you are in Southern California, you should be able to grow about any variety you choose. Keep us posted with that limit of 10. (LOL) Maybe Jon will jump in and give you some good pointers. He is in So Cal also.

I would add Black Madeira and Ronde de Bordeaux .

You want to know the great thing about goals?  Once you have attained it, you change it and increase it - hey - it's your goal, youcan change it as many times as you like!!

Yeah, I have a feeling I will be changing it (especially when I get more room). I would love to add Ronde de Bordeaux, but the cuttings seem to pricey to obtain right now. Perhaps I can trade for it in the future.

You're missing a lot of good figs, I've got over 70 and my original goal was single digit

And Barry's only a tenth of the way there.

nullzero......Famous last words : "I want to limit myself to 10 varities".  Ha Ha  !!  Good luck my friend.  I think the "bug" has already bitten.

what martin said. Black Madeira and Ronde dB. also some green figs. i heard great things about JH Adriatic and others.

Note attached Topic some ideas on inventory reduction and fig taste grouping. Good Luck.

Thank you for the replies guys. I have JH Adriatic cuttings on the way. As for limiting myself to 10, I see that being broken sometime soon lol. I know myself to well (I am just trying to put a restriction on myself), I have over 30 Opuntia sp. varieties selected for fruit. So its not very hard for me to collect fig varieties...

The beauty..or problem, I haven't decided which, about trees in containers is that you can always seem to find room for more. I personally have found that if you take the number you were planning on having and multiply that by 3 or 4 you will be content, for now. :)

problem is.. you'll always find that special fig you really want to add to your list. at certain point those special fig will be hard to come by and you will end up adding others while waiting for that one.

Less then a year ago I wanted just the one tree I bought - Then .....

Well just finished obtaining this new years cuttings. I am going to restrain from adding more figs until the end of the year.

So far I have;

Plants (various sizes)
Vista, LSU gold, Bruinswick, Dark Portuguese

Cuttings on the way (need to be rooted)
Paradiso, Ronde de Bordeaux, Marseille VS Black, JH Adriatic, Panache

Kadota (given to a friend)

Think I am good for now. I would add more but I have so much stuff going on from Acai to Tomatoes... I am running out of room lol.
