Experiment: Buried some cuttings directly into Soil.......

These were extras they are about 4 inches long. I placed them in the container with a moist mix. Then I dug a hole put some water, waited for it to seep.
Wasn't seeping fast enough so I added some rocks and dirt. There is about 3 inches of soil put on top of them. I plan to dig them out in 2-3 months.
The variety is an unknown, I call it "Family Favorite", for me I would describe as a large celeste type.

Experiments with extra cuttings are fun!  Good luck with your project.  I hope they are in partial shade.  Baby figs aren't happy with full sun.  I don't use cans in my fig nursery.  Just lay them horizontal in a shallow trench.  Only problem with my way is the roots form at one end, go deep into the ground, and the tree emerges at the other and when I try to pot them up, the cutting is still horizontal and I can't get the tree in the middle of the 5 gallon pot.  BUT, oh well.

I'm excited more about my under boulder experiment at the moment.

Let us know when they show progress!

Where were you yesterday...LOL  When they appear they will get morning til noon full sun. Will keep an eye out and see how they do. If they pop up and appear bad with the sun will dig them up or do something...???  I saw your post on planting by a boulder. Its springtime and time to try new things. Good luck on your projects and figs.

When I did mine like this last year, they got full sun for about half-day. They did great! I don't think  you will have any problems with half-day sun in California.

I laid my extra cuttings (no containers) horizontally and buried them in the soil. I potted them up into 2-gallon pots the next spring, when they were about 1 foot tall. It worked out very well. Some of them rotted, but many rooted.

I planted my cuttings in the full 9am-6pm sun in December. They really love the sun. The leaves are so hard and strong. It took a while before they started growing the leaves but I assume because the roots were the higher priority. What I wouldn’t do is to cover the cuttings with cups to protect from the sun. Just let them grow, they will be happier at the end. Please be easy with the watering since you planted them in the bottles. I would actually just put them straight into the ground, then any amount of water would be fine (you will not have much in the current drought anyway).

Should work ok Armando - as long as you put plenty of drain holes in the bottle. Otherwise, when it rains, the bottles would fill with water & drown the cuttings.

I agree with Igor. The leaves should be fine since they will be emerging under natural conditions.

I wish you the best on your experiment.

Looking forward to the results, Armando!
