F.R.O.G. Jelly

Not exactly close neighbors but still neighbors. I have been through Chattanooga a couple of times on my way to and from hikes on the Cumberland Trail and twice on my way to TX when my daughter was stationed there. Will be heading back your direction sometime next year to explore the new sections of the Cumberland trail which they have just opened up. We were part of the first group to through hike the trail about two years ago and it was fabulous...like a trip through history seeing things largely unchanged from pioneer times.  Hard hike as most of the trail markings were gone and there were no bridges in a lot of places where they washed out years ago but very worthwhile. Walked through meadows of shoulder high grasses, saw big cats and elk as well as the normal assortment of critters.  Cliffs and gorges around Soddy Daisy were gorgeous. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

We'll definitely meet up and I love this area too, only hesitant about purchasing a home in Soddy Daisy. They have one of the oldest Nuclear Power Plants in the country along with numerous fines and citations. And I found this for reference! http://www.mayhaw.org/LMA_Home_Page.html I didn't even realize it was an actual tree. I thought it was a bush! duh' lol

Thanks for the info.  Thought mayhaws were more of a bush than a tree....at least the ones I have seen in the wild are more like thickets than trees (but you can say that about unpruned or untrained figs too).

Well there ya go... Learn something new everyday! The more I know, the more I don't know. And it comes as no surprise that these trees flourish in the boggy swamps. I was raised in Savannah, GA and now it makes sense that this tree was readily available to my aunt some 60-70yrs ago as part of her natural surroundings. Of course she would have made use of this fruit when she has the opportunity and when she didn't she looked for the jelly for her cakes. Amazing.
