Family tree help needed Brogiotto Nero

Can anyone tell me the relationship that exists between Cavaliere to Brogiotto Nero to Nero to Barnisotte to Brogiotto Noir to Ischia Black . . .
How closely related is Cavaliere to Ischia Black?

If anyone can supply me with any info I'd sure appreciate it.

Thank you,
mgginva

Brogiotto Nero, Brogiotto Noir are a few of the synonyms for Barnisotte. Below is a side-by-side comparison. I don't see a close relationship.

Genetic tests show that Ischia Black and Barnisotte are part of the same family of figs.  Broadly speaking.

Hello Ruben, May I ask where you found the chart for identifing.

Good question!

It's something I have been putting together.

When will it be done and will you share it? Really nice work.

Thanks, Mike. It's a work in progress. For now I am focusing on varieties I have or want and those that are often confused. There are many notes attached to the cells that don't show up when you do a copy-paste into this message window. I've shared the template for others to use to track their own trees on this forum. The reference section will probably be posted at a later date.

Really great effort.

Michael, I know this is an old post but today, I finished my last set of trees moving them inside my garage. I forgot 3 trees....Nero, Brogoitto Nero, and Genoevese Nero. Cool weather is coming Sunday and I did a thorough walk thru and found them.

GN did not fruit this year but Nero and BN did. These 2 figs are not the same and nether is Barnissotte.

OK Dennis, which 2 are you referring to?  (Looks like you were talking about 3 figs in the sentence before, not 2).  So are you saying that you think Barnissotte is different from Brogiotto Nero?  (i.e. are you saying that Barnissotte is the same as neither of the others, or just that's it's different from one of the others?).  Please clarify... I'm interested in how you sort these out.

Thank you Dennis. I have been collecting all the varieties that may be related to Cavaliere and should get fruit on most next year. I did get Cavaliere figs this year (were darn good for first year figs) but all the Nero and Nero types will have to wait til next year. thx.
BTW, I have not forgotten I owe you a plant - just had bad luck rooting it. I'll have for you soon.

Fellows,

If these pages are correct,

Brogiotto Nero and Cavaliere do not seem to have any similarities.

Hope to have first Cavaliere figs next season

Francisco

Thanks Francisco.  Good info.  I too will likely have Cavaliere figs next season.

Do you know if Brogiotto Nero and Barnissotte are similar/same?   Dennis, same question to you still.  (Your statement about that above is a bit ambiguous... it can be parsed two ways).  Or to anyone else who is growing "both" of them... just looking for an experiential assessment of that.

Mike

I did not get a Brogiotto Nero this year but hope I do next year. I did get some Cavaliere figs though. I forgot to get another set of pics so these will have to do. I couldn't find my knife so I just ripped it open. I thought I'd shoot pics of the next one but I spaced on it so unfortunately this is the best I have to offer. Sorry - these really are bad photos but . . .

You have only one fig knife, Michael? I've got a few extras lying around that I'm pretty sure will cut a fig. I'll send one or two your way in your next shipment of cuttings. Just leave them scattered about among your trees so the next time you pick a fig but can't be bothered to walk a few tens of feet to the kitchen, you'll be able to lean left or right and the give us worthwhile fig photos.

Lol.

Mike, what I was trying to say is, no, they are not the same. My Barnssoitte figs are larger, sweet, and richer. Nero is very sweet and jet black. I don't have Cavaliere but I do have Brogiotto Bianco!

Thanks Michael!

Thanks Dennis.  That's what I sort of thought you meant.  Thanks for clarifying.  And thanks Michael for the info too.

Mike

Guys,
I think we all have an interest in these rare but interesting and probably important figs.

I'll send those of you that need one a Cavaliere or at least cuttings -- but I only have one Brogiotto Nero. If we can all get both Cavaliere and Brogiotto Nero we can make some head way.

I may be able to harvest one or two BN cuttings but I can certainly supply all the Cavaliere cuttings we need.

Let me know who needs a few and I'll send. Hopefully we can get Dennis or  . . . to harvest a few BN cuttings.

I may be able to cut one or two.

Sorry if I put you on the hot seat Dennis. If your BN is too small or you don't want to participate I'm sorry for being pushy.

I'd like to do more of these comparisons where there are multiple players.

Getting a group of figs and folks that have the same figs together so we can compare notes is one of the things I think is great about f4f.

Thanks Michael.  I have Cavaliere (the one I bought from you last year), but I don't have Brogiotto Nero.  If you or Dennis find that you have a cutting available, I'd be happy to participate in the multi-person comparison.  Let me know (but please use email rather than PM... my PM queue is always full, but email is reliable).  Hope you're well.

Mike, Sorry I am late on my reply

Agree with what Dennis said of these two cultivars
Since remote times (Eisen's) there has been a tendency to say they are similar figs and sometimes another player, (Bourjassotte black and/or white ) was also listed as synonym which it is not.

The Portuguese Cavaleiro, I thought was same as the Italian Cavaliere
The Port. and Italian names with exactly the same meaning 'horse rider'
But these two are diff figs. Fruit/leaves are not the same

off topic
Francisco, that is a beautiful collection of photos in your Flickr account. Very nicely done!

Neil,
One can never have too many knives or flash lights so anything you send will get used. I emailed you about cuttings, btw and have no heard back.

Dennis,
I was sent a good sized Barnisotte from a generous fellow in New England but during the second year I had it it just went down with FMV like no other plant I've ever seen. I got that particular plant away from my others and it's gone. I bought cuttings and am growing several other Barnissote starts and I'm wondering if you've had issues with yours.

Mike,
I don't have a BN cutting for you but perhaps in the Spring. Sorry.

Francisco,
Thank you the the info - there just isn't much out there it seems. Great pictures. Makes me realize I need to work on my backgrounds and lighting if I want my photos to look as sharp and well lit.
So I guess I need to figure out if mine are Port. or Italian then get which ever one they aren't.

Not to create more confusion , but I have some relatively rare Colummu Niuru cuttings (direct from Italy) to trade for any of the above mentioned varieties.
Also Niagara Black ( from Canada)....
