Favorite Fig

Ok, I'm new to the forum . . but not new to loving figs. Certainly not new to enjoying a backyard orchard and garden either. I'm interested in hearing other's opinions on what they consider to be a good fig. I confess . . I like a dark fig . . and I tend to enjoy them most when they would be considered over-ripe . . you know . . not fresh and light . . but sweet and huskey.

What an amazing fruit that so many people know nothing about. They only see them in stores or highway stands as dried fruit(which are good also).

I grew up with two figs in the yard . . one was a black mission . . the other was a white fig, probably Kadota. The white produced large figs that were pleasant enough, but lacked character imo . . but the mission . . well the mission was so much better. The richness way overshadowed the other. I could eat them until I was stuffed. And did on many occasion.

So . . I'm interested in what others like and why. Tell us what you like best and why!

Dark fig. Preferably dried, to dull the sweet and enhance the richness.

I like a fig that tastes figgy more than anything else, with a rich figgy flavor.  I love Celestes and the Atreano that Herman gave me to taste when we were in NJ in the fall.  It is green with a red pulp and it had fig flavor in surround sound.

I'm not sure I will like the figs with another kind of fruit flavor to them, but have only tasted a Scott's Black and it did have a slight figgy taste.  I haven't tasted any with a honey-like flavor yet, but am looking forward to that.

You can never go wrong with Violette de Bordeaux! The queen in my orchard last season by far, but some others not too far behind.

I like both color when they are best in taste, and flavor, doesn't matter how big or small.
Dark ones:Maltese Falcon(protected from cold, here),Kathleen Black,Tacoma violett,Scott's black,Gino's fig,Sal Corleone,Weeping fig,Improved Celeste,etc.
White ones:Atreano,Adriatic,Bataglia Green,Paradiso,etc
Notice, more blacks get ripe here than whites, because whites needs more Sommer heat,so most whites do not do well here.
Of course in warmer climates, one have even more choices, but here in New Jersey, these cultivars can take the winter and get ripe in the Sommer,so that is why I like them

Herman does Battaglia green do good for you? Do you have any pictures you can post of Battaglia green?Thank you.

Well Bataglia is late getting ripe, but ,one need ripe fruits late in October too,so I like it.
It takes rain very well, and flavor is excellent.

Nice fig Herman one told me he'll send me an air layer so i'm looking foward to this nice fig.Does pinching help at all with this fig?Do they only ripen in October for you in your area or do you get a few in September?Thank You.

Everyone in my household like the small figs. Seems small figs are bigger on flavor. Coincidently they happen to be the dark ones like Gino, MVS, Hardy Chicago, Negronne, Sal's EL, Dark Portuguese. I hope my LSU Champagne will turn out to be another favourite.

I am in agreement with the dark figs mentioned.  However, I will add that Smith is a white fig that is VERY BIG on flavor. At peak ripeness, it is much better flavored than some dark figs, IMO. In the South it will produce two crops.
