feeding youngens

I have some figs potted up in 1 gal containers was wondering if I feed them with miracle grow what ratio should it be. Don't want to give them anything to strong.

I usually water them first couple of times to settle the soils and what not. About a week later I start with 1/4-1/3 strength of MG every two week or so. Usually, I water them first then about an hour later I fertilize them.

I have always used a product called "Ironite"

I get it at Lowes in either 5 or 25 pound bags.

It won't burn and is time released so from my perspective it is safe for young figs and has trace
elements that Miracal-Gro and other readily available products do not have.

I get really strong viable growth using it.

Let me know it you try it and like it.

Best,

Will

One should read up on Ironite before using on figs or anything you are going to eat. Sure it has minor elements several which are heavy metals. I think it has been banned in Canada already. It's probably great for grass, just don't let your goat eat the grass

Pete, I also do a very dilute MG early on and its been working well.

Question: Do you water first becasue....

A) Water first so the uptake of fertilizer is not too fast?
B) Want the plant to hydrate first?
C) Keep the dilute MG in the soil and not have it just run out the bottom of the pot?
D) All of the above.

Thank you.

I just don't want to fertilize dry roots, and want to flush out built up salt and fertilizer.

Excellent point Pete. That makes a lot of sense to flush them out. Thank you and I'll add that to my watering regiment.
