Fertilizer question

  • RGL

I have been raising figs in a container for about the past 5 years. I currently have 10 trees seven of which are producing fruit. I searched around on the internet for advice about fertilizing and it's very mixed. Some say don't fertilize some say fertilize with 10 10 10. I recently had a conversation with a man who raises figs in our area who fertilizes 19-19-19 every week. Can anybody shed some light on the confusion around this subject?? I also am interested in talking with anyone who's interested in talking with me about fig. I'm in Beaver County Independence Township 5 miles from Aliquippa.
Thanks
Looing forward to gleaning from you all.

 i use miracle grow ,fish emulsion,and 10-10-10,of coarse not all at once ,in rotation weekly,i am near uniontown ,pa. i am in fayette county,pa. anytime you want to talk i'm game~we are about 1 hr travel on rt 79 from each other ,i only have about 25-30 varieties~i am in it now for 4 years ,~

adding well composted manure to the planting holes always helps.
it will provide fertilizer, improve tilth n help correct ph problems.
other than that, do what sucessful growers in your area do, even tho a steady diet of 19-19-19 seems odd to me.
most folks tend to reduce N during fruiting season.

Thanks Susie and Bluegill.    We have had a lot of rain these past few weeks and the figs are lovin it.
I like the decomposed manure recommendation and the rotation of fertilizers.

Feeding container grown figs is a challenge and you really need to develop the right soil mix and a fertilization schedule that works for you.
Use the search button and read some of the many informative discussions on the topic.
here is a couple threads I found relevant;

oh yea i make compost tea out of well aged  cow manure . no filtering ,no air pumps etc. (let's not get crazy here keep it simple),i stir it well. i put three big pitchforks full in a 50 gal drum and mix well,it lasts a long time.i pour it around the trunks like a watering, they do love it ,
