Fertilizing Cuttings

Read all the articles I could find doing a search. So when do you start fertilizing the
new cuttings and what do you use?

I do. But I use liquid root hormone after I pot the cutting up in 1g pots to reduce the stress.

I read conflicting info. Some say you can fertilize once there are roots and leaves. Some say if roots are too young they will burn. I fertilize once they are in 1 gal pot. 1/4-1/3 strength MG. so far no issue.

I do the same as Pete does. Once they're in a larger pot I give them a weak solution of fertilizer. Haven't had any problems.

I use mulch and add a scoop of horse bedding (composted); the roots will take what they need and only the following year I add some slow release fertilizer. It works well for me.

Same as above, once there is a large root mass and at least two full leaves, use 1/2 teaspoon Miracle Grow / 1 gallon of water. I also add 1 tablespoon of Espoma GardenTone fertilizer and 1 tablespoon Dolemite Limestone / 1 gallon container (for micro-nutrients), once a month. Liquid fertilizer is applied after the container mix is watered (plain water) first, once a week. No problems to date.

I fertilize as soon as there are roots. I use houseplant strength of whatever fertilizer is around, usually miracle grow. First I wet the soil with water then fertilize. I go right from uline bag to 1 gal pot. After a few days I put some Osmocote on and just water when needed.

I use pelletized 10-10-10 right on top of the dirt. That way it gets a little fertilizer everytime I water. This is after I can see roots through the cut and have active leaf growth. Never lost a cutting to fertilizer burn

Fertilizer: Dyno-Grow Foliage Pro (9-3-6)
Extra stuff: "Superthrive"

When do I use? When roots are visible

I follow the direction. Truthfully I eyeball the dosage 1/4- 1/2 tsp of liquid fertilizer and dilute in ONE gallon of water. I put this diluted stuff in my spray bottle too for foliage. I pour their food (fertilzer) till water comes out from the bottom of container. Then I water as need basis.

P.S I haven't done this for Maltese Beauty or Tiny Tim yet. Both are putting out leaves now.. One more month-lol

I do not fertilize my cuttings till they are 4-6 months old. The mix that I use has plenty of nutrients for them already. I began to fertilize them around June when they are above 12" tall and growing vigorously.

Navid.

Hi Navid, what mix do you use? I'm looking over different options next year. As far a fertilizing the past to years I avoided fertilizing new trees, but I think now I will start doing in sooner. Maybe add a small amount of slow release fert once they go into 1 gal pots.

If you feel the need, use a slow release. Otherwise there really is no rush.  Better a small live cutting then a dead big one.

If you are using a mix that has no nutritive value would not a very small dose of fertilizer help?  I understand not wanting to burn the cuttings but a liquid fertilizer diluted at say 1/4 strength of 12-55-6 with added iron has to have some benefit to the root growth.

Yeah, I hear you the problem I noticed isn't just that they were small. They started to look a little anemic after a while.

GTO, that is what I am looking at now on a few. The green is looking real pale.

fertilizer is one of those thing that seems to be very personal. i have read number of posts on them back few years ago. everyone has different opinion and different ratio that they use.. some try to see what works the best for them, and others swear by what the experts say. i suggest getting some BT and test on what works for you :)

Yeah, it happened to me towards the end of summer. I watered them with MG and it helped, but they didn't grow well. I'm thinking a little more will help them.

I am thinking maybe something lite and organic?

I haven't had successfully rooted cuttings yet, but I plan to use 1/4 strength fish emulsion and a sprinkle of Epsom salt on soil surface.

The fish emulsion I have found to be no problem with younger cuttings, as long as you don't go strong, watch the surface of the soil as it may mold with addition of fish fertilizer, just needs to be brushed around and it will go away if it does happen.

Jennifer, do you use both Dyno-Grow Foliage Pro (9-3-6) and Superthrive for watering and foliage spray? How often do you spray yours?
