Fico Paradiso.

Fico Paradiso.. or Paradise Fig. there are about 6-7 different ones out there.

from a book "LA POMONA ITALIANA DI G. GALLESIO E' CONSERVATA", (i think that's the name), it shows a green fig.

http://monteodorisio.xoom.it/foto%20botanica/fico%20paradiso.html

this specific fig seems to match Giovanni's Paradiso (the person who grow fig in PA), and Paradiso Gene (the figs that Gene H. introduced). i'm not sure who Gene got his fig from, but i got mine from Gene.

it's a green fig with dark red pulp. the flesh doesn't really get stained.

depends on the season and weather condition, the taste ranges from note of honey to melon. sometimes, the seed will have touch of nuttiness.

the size of the figs is slightly larger than golf ball.. one of today's fig was rather large.

in my area, it will have 3 crops. breba, early main crop and late main crop. the early main crop has the best appearance and taste. it's usually sweeter and has honey in the middle. during the second main crop, so far, melon taste has dominated.

the tree i current have has been growing in 10 gal for last 2 1/2 yrs. it has been putting on figs for last 3 yrs.

last yr, the figs absorbed too much water and most of them blew up. however, the figs are doing much better this yr. they are ripening even in this wet weather and keeping the flavor.

there are about 6-7 different figs.

Paradiso Gene
Paradiso Nero (Adriano)
Paradiso Nero (Mario)
Paradiso Bronze (VS)
Paradiso Bronze (Dusan)
Joe's Paradiso

first 5 are supposed to be very similar to each other but different in skin color. the Joe's Paradiso is definitely different fig.

currently i have some Paradiso Nero and Paradiso Bronze VS growing in 1 gal. i'll be able to tell what they are like in next couple of yrs. i lost both Paradiso Nero Mario and Paradiso Bronze Dusan over the winter due to few issues.

the forum and GW forum both last old threads regarding Fico Paradiso.

Hi Pete. Thank you for the info. I see now that I have 5 more Paradisos to collect :)

Adriano has more than one Paradiso variant

i saw two or three on adriano's site. bianco and nero. not sure if bianco is same as gene's Paradiso. i believe gene sent Paradiso to UCD and jon.

Pete,
So the one Jon is selling is the Gene's ?

that, i do not know. i believe gene sent to jon, but i don't know if jon sells them or not since i didn't get one from jon

According to Gene he got Paradiso locally.  I presume that means around the Wash. DC area. "I acquired this in 2000 from a elderly man whose father came from Italy. The father had gotten it from a fellow Italian immigrant."

There is yet another one going around.
GM#9 (Paradiso-type) which I first (locally) found as an unkown green/red fig.
I turned out to be veeery similar (if not exact-same as Gene's one).
Somewhere in this FF, there is pic of both them next to each other.
I remember Gene being intrigued and asking me all about it...

thanks for the thread, pete. i was very curious about this. the posts on GW didn't help much.

i still have trouble searching here, even with jon's tip.

by the way, i did find pics of bronze figs. joe's is bronze, but not the same as the ones pictured  here. it looks very bronze, and i think when it's completely ripe there will be no hint of  green. different leaf shape too, so i guess they aren't even related.

some time ago, there was a long debate about which was the "real" Paradiso. both this forum and GW forum had it going. i don't think there was a conclusion, but what i think might be the case is there are number of figs named Paradiso in different regions of italy. i mean.. Paradiso is a perfect name for a fig. the story goes something like this... an old gent is seating below his beloved fig tree and having breakfast of bread and figs. someone asked him what he was doing.. and he said "this is my paradise"..

by the way, i tried to get in contact with Gionvanni to see if Paradiso Gene was same as his, but never could find his contact. but one thing i noticed from his story is that he peels the figs like orange. last 2 yrs, i couldn't peel my Paradiso Gene, but this yr, the skin comes off clean, leaving flesh and pulp like orange. i would be neat trick for people who doesn't like skin.. tho, i peeled the skin off and ate it after the flesh and pulp.

Hello Pete this is the first year I have Joe Morle Paradiso, the fruit is large and the skin has been opening large cleavages prior to ripening, some of them have very large necks. I can't say I am overjoyed just yet. You say this is completely different tree from your paradisos?

Thx

Rafael

rafael, my morle paradisio fig is not even close to pete's. totally different tree.

Pete how is the Nero and bronze vs I sent?

rafael, when there was discussion going on regarding the "real" Paradiso, two figs that were mentioned were Paradiso Gene and Joe's Paradiso. maggie (italiangirl) also has Paradiso which is same as Joe's Paradiso but from different source then joe. so, it's rather clear both are Paradiso as far as name is concerned. but they are not the same figs.

then Paradiso Bronze Dusan came into to picture. the is a fig which one of the forum member brought into the country from his old country. per the discussion this is same as Paradiso Gene, but with bronze skin. i have been looking for this and obtained good cuttings from very generous forum member.. but unfortunately, i killed all 3 cuttings. dan (the_celt) also provided me with Paradiso Bronze VS and Paradiso Nero (not sure what the source on this was, i assume it's same as adriano's nero). both are currently growing in 1 gal.. i mislabeled all my Paradiso from dan.. so i'll have to wait and see which is which. Paradiso Bronze VS is one that herman introduced. i heard this one is awesome. not sure if this is same as Paradiso Bronze Dusan.

there is another Paradiso Nero which mario (one who introduced Salce) has. that one came from mario's old home town. mario provided cuttings twice, and i couldn't root them both times. not sure what happened.

from what i have been reading, all these Fico Paradiso are similar to each other, but Joe's Paradiso. i'll be able to tell more about them as time goes by. i know dan's trees are doing great :)

hey dan, they are doing great :) i mislabeled them so.. i'll have to sit on them for yr or two more before i find out which one is bronze and which one is nero. somehow i put bronze on the nero and nero on the bronze.. then try to fix it and everything got mixed up.

they have figs on them, and i'm keeping one or two each.. to see if i can speed up the process. they definitely grow fast.

but i find that they don't like to harden fast. which is leading to some of the plants looking like they are "creeping". one that i put a stake on, is now more than 2' tall. need to move that to large container soon.

thanks :)

You should be able to tell easy by the shape of the figs

I have Joe's Paradiso, this will be the second year for it. Last year I only got to taste one or two figs and wasn't impressed. I know it's still young and the taste can change but another thing against it was that we had a lot of rain when they were getting ripe and that caused them to burst open and spoil from gnats, bees and other critters. If it doesn't improve this year it will find a happier home where it's wanted. Being in a colder climate I have a limited amount of space for winter storage so I only want to keep trees that will give me a good crop. Any poor producing or so so figs are being kicked out.

There you go Tony !
Come to the Dark side.

In my zone, I have tasted Paradiso Dusan, Paradiso Gene, Paradiso R.Watts, Paradiso Adriano(Not sure whether Bianco/Nero)and they don't seem to impress me much. Maybe Paradiso's really needs hot weather to ripen nicely. More impressive figs seems to be the dark ones. Some light color breba figs that tasted good for 2013 are DK, Latarrula, JH Adriatic, Faliciano, Yugo Yellow, Ruby 4, Z2  and an unknown numbered UCD fig.

paully, i think herman said the same thing. the Paradiso wasn't too impressive in NJ. needs good sun and heat. it was late fig for him, if i remember it right. in NC, weather cooperating, it's not a late fig. last yr, i got the first main crop in late june or early july. this yr, even with less than ideal weather condition, i'm having it mid aug. not that bad. mine is 4 yrs old and 3rd year putting on the figs, it's keep improving every yr.

@ Bullet, I will trial my Paradiso in the green house next season. They seem to be productive in both
breba & main crop.

@@ Yes Martin Vadar I hear and obey. I will join the dark side.

Truth be told I do prefer the dark ones. My mother is 86 feels the same and if I give her a light fig she looks at it and says and I quote "What the h@!! do you want me to do? Eat this?" She says when her mother lived in Italy she would only pick the black ones because they have all the flavor and the others weren't good for much.

Wonderful story Tony . ; )

two Kathleen's Black i had yesterday seems to have similar taste as Paradiso Gene. little "sharper". will have to taste more Kathleen's Black to see how it will truly taste. the ones i took yesterday were not exactly fully ripen.

Damn! I just realized the Paradiso JM that I have was not the variety I ordered this spring, I meant to order a variety called White Genoa, I am going to get rid of this plant I think. The figs are huge, and the tree is prolific for a rookie, there are more than 40 fruits on it. Maybe they need more time (as in years) but I don't see them ranking with the Paradiso Gene variety. They are just not intense, nor complex. Oh well!
