Field Growing

I have been growing some of the Greek Varieties (Vessilika Mavra, Melissi), Figo Preto, RdB and others in Pot (Georgia 7b), but realized they reached out to the bottom of the pot, through hole, to the ground!  And they were only cutting I got last November-December (2013) time frame! ....

Shall I put them on the ground?   Will they handle the freezing temp it gets at times (below 10f) here in Stone Mountain, GA area?

When they go dormant, cut away the roots that have attached to the ground.  I would keep those in pots in an unheated garage or shed that will not go below 30 F.

Thanks Frank!

And welcome to F4F!

Hi MrChoudhury,
Welcome to the F4F forum !
The trees are yours... The risk is yours ...
If you have a backup rdb, try putting that one in ground and hope for the best ! Rdb should handle 5°F with almost no problem - it all depends then on global moisture and local wind chill effects.
I'm in zone7 too, and most years with minimal protection, my fig-trees do fine - check my post on winter protection for my fig-trees .
I would at least keep "figo preto" in the pot.
So in the Fall, just cut the roots under the pot with a knife or a shovel, and protect the trees inside a garage .

Stone Mountain, GA.  Sounds like one of my fave shows, Hardscrabble.. AKA Cold Mountain.  I would protect your trees from the cold.  They will die if you don't, and they won't come back.  Stick them in the basement or put a ton of hay all around them for protection.  Welcome from So CA
