Fig 4 Fun fig cuttings

Gosh Jon, now I feel greedy. If it will help to spread the joy, I will take my chances on just one scion of each type and that way perhaps you can satisfy other orders.

I thought it goes without saying that i'd rather have 1 or 2 than none. So if a rare plant has 3 cuttings I"d be happy to get 1 and get it out to others as well. OTOH, when I have 3 cuttings and they all root I'm not going to keep all 3. Some have to go to family but some will circulate here or ebay with a notice here. The plastic bag method has been very reliable.

Man, I hope I'm not too late on this. I can't believe I missed the unleashing of the new list!!

It depends on what you want. If you need to have the hot "rare" thing, chances are not good. But, on the other hand, there are hundreds of very good figs that people bypass, hoping to score the rare one, when they could have something that is just as good, in many cases, that just doesn't get the hype. Not saying they are all the same, but there is a lot of good eating to be had, even if you don't have one of the 6 or 7 that everyone is trying to get. ;-))

So what does it mean when your list says something like:

nnn Hollier NOT

Does it mean you were told it was a Hollier but it turned out to be something else?  Thanks.

rcantor,

>>> Does it mean you were told it was a Hollier but it turned out to be something else?

Yes, 'something' like that.

I can chime in about that particular Hollier_Not fig (org. SSE: GA IN C 06; -

then simply described as: "another newer fig, from friend, from Louisiana."),

since I was the (indirect) source for it.

See post#'s 15, 17, 19, 23, 24 :

It is a good fig and most probably, it is a True (color-moody) Hollier after all...

[Pl. also note the taste-moody (Worst to First) p/o heading of the above thread.]

Very well said Jon>   As usual

Jon ,
Do you have a top ten list of figs that "just don't get no respect"
That is the excellent ones that get passed over for the hot rare thing ?
Ones that make you say , "I can't believe these haven't been snapped up already" ?

I just realized that as I just cut and pasted from the first list to my request that I ended up taking all the cuttings of 1, maybe two varieties because I pasted the numbers in parentheses along with the number and name.

lol....

Numbers in parentheses are just accession information.

What an interesting topic. This post deserves its own thread.

got cuttings in today,  They look good (into the refridgerator for a few weeks)...

I put in a second request.   please ignore the "add to previous request" part.

fingers crossed again....

I had left those #'s too when I cut and pasted from the list. Since I had to get the list from someone else, I did not receive the direction/info portion of the cutting list. I must of drove Jon crazy with at least 2 emails I wrote to him thinking I may have requested 2 or 3 orders of a variety because I left those #'s on there not understanding that they were just accession #'s. LOL!

Sorry about that again, Jon!

Alteast today I was able to access the list link on the site for the first time. So I think I will be able to access the 2nd list when it comes down.

Thanks again for all the people who helped foward me a list to make my order last week.

Would love to see posts on the "top 10 under appreciated fig varieties"! Great idea!

The second list is up - it's at the same place the first was.  If you d/l'd it since Jon's post saying the second list was up then you got the second list which includes all the leftovers from the first list  :)  Also the name of the document is something like 'second list'

Got my cuttings - thanks.  Do you think they'd be better off in the fridge for a while or just potted up?   If I don't hear I may try both.  :)

Overlooked:

Negronne
Strawberry Verte
Beale
Narragansett
Saratoga
Paradiso
278-128
Ventura
Samoa Sunshine
Black Mission "NL"
Panache
...just for starters.

The greener cuttings I would start immediately. The harder ones could wait if you want. I'm all for starting them when they are as fresh as possible.

Well, I think I requested 4 of those, so I hope that means I might get something!

This is hilarious!  I'm glad it tastes great even if it's moody.  Thanks for passing the specimen on so I could get one  :)  It's great to know the lineage of the wood.

can I add narragansett to my request from yesterday, then...

:)

email:  scohil@fps.fitz.k12.mi.us   scott hills

(knew I should have asked for it)

Should we have got an email from the second list, I got an email from the first list but no way to pay with paypal that I can see???

Jon probably has not got to your order yet to send you an invoice.

Got mine yesterday.

  • Rob

Just got an email a couple hours ago.  I'm sure he has a limited amount of help and all those twigs pretty much look the same so it must be challenging keeping it straight

Did everyone see the instructions to put the requests in numerical order?  I sent mine in really fast but didn't read the new instructions.  By the time I saw the instructions it was 2 days later.  I'll be lucky to get coal in my stocking  :(

For cuttings from the fridge it often takes 3-5 weeks to see the first roots.  What's the time frame for cuttings like Jon's where they were about to break dormancy and were never all that cold?

Thanks.
