I loved the part about giving up, lopping off branches to stake tomatoes, then seeing them leaf out!  Best never to give up on a fig tree!

Yes, and :  "Biagio was so invested in the figs that once they started to ripen, he would sit in the backyard with a can filled with stones. When birds came near the tree, he’d shake the can to scare them away."

Notice all the articles?  Almost no one mentions a smuggled, Apple tree, or, a precious heirloom Cherry tree.  It's always the FIG tree that gets the poignant, sentimental story.  Fig trees give back all the love we put into them, year, after year....without fail.  We can also share our beloved trees, with others, in the form of cuttings,  air-layers, etc.  A gift from the Middle-East.

It has always struck me how many on this forum have Italian roots.  This article helps me to more fully understand the connection between Italian-Americans and figs.  I have no ancestry to the areas famous for figs, and no family history of fig growing, but I have gotten the "bug" anyway for all the reasons that we are all familiar with.  However, so far my family just doesn't get it but I'm doing my best to start a new tradition.  I need to get the midwesterners to visit us when the figs are getting ripe!

But I wonder about the Spaniards, the French, the Greeks, the Croatians, The Turks and the Lebanese, Israelis, Palestinians. Some have large populations of immigrants in the USA and they may like their figs a lot.
