fig beetle

Being new to most figs, I did a search for Maltese Beauty, and came across an article and video on http://www.timesofmalta.com concerning a fig beetle that has destroyed many of the trees of the area, and shows no sign of stopping. Just wondering if this has been discussed, since I see many cuttings offered on ebay, from Malta, that ship worldwide.

Maltese Beauty you see in this forum is not "imported" from malta. it originated from malta, but we are not buying it straight from there. original source is person how is growing it in US. Maltese Falcon has been in this country for relatively long time.

Gary, overseas import have always been discouraged here, we need to realize, although very tempting, how dangerous it can be to our homeland for long term.

Gary,
There have been many discussions and arguments on this forum about importing figs both legally and illegally. There are those that try and discourage illegal importing but there are certainly quite a few members who do import outside the law and many will argue there is nothing wrong with doing so.
If you want to read more of these arguments/discussions try using f4f's search engine. Some of the more heated "discussions" have been blocked or deleted and the subject gets heated pretty quickly unfortunately.
Personally my advise is not to import illegally as the feds are taking this issue more seriously as time passes and the punishments for breaking the law in these cases can be serious. There are other reasons as well - concerning ramifications to the environment - but I'm not going to go into those at this point.
There are tons of places to get cuttings without importing them. Jon and UCD being two good examples.

Thanks Michael and Aaron, I certainly wasn't advocating buying this way, only concerned that some might be tempted to. Living in wine grape country, and making a living as a Landscaper and Gardener for 40 years, I understand the dangers of pests being introduced here. I'm happy to know that forum members are informed and spreading the word.
