Fig collection in Kansas - some photos

Hello,

Here are some "mid-season" photos of a few of the fig plants in my collection.   Plants are doing very well this season despite the tremendous heat (a few new starts just about baked).    I had a lot of brebas this year, probably due to the heat and increased maturity of some of the plants, but none were that tasty.    A reasonable looking main crop is in place and if there is enough heat later this season, I may have a decent crop this year.

Some main crop "Pananas purple," and Petite Negri figs are starting to ripen.   Some species figs (ficus palmata and ficus auriculata) are amongst the photos.   The leaves are quite beautiful.   The picture of the silhouette against the sky is from my older in-ground fig that I protect every winter.    I like the outline of the leaves against the sky.

Enjoy,
Ingevald

Good to hear from you.

Been a while.

Beautiful pics-Thanks

All great but I love seeing starters the most- Imagining them as big potted or in-ground trees.

Good to hear from you.

Those are some nice pics and thanks for sharing.

Nice one.  In picture #2 is that a large false blue indigo plant?

What is this one?:  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/file?id=1179440

It is actually the white flowered version of the false blue indigo, baptisia alba.    I moved some of my figs into an area where I was growing some native prairie plants.    This year it had a spectacular bloom.    The other photo you asked about is a seedling Smyrna fig - the leaves are indeed very interesting.

By the way - the title of this thread was supposed to say "Kansas."

Ingevald, if you click the "edit" button on your first post, then click "Go Advanced", you can change the title there and re-submit, it will correct the title.  Give it a shot.

Jason - thanks for the tip!   I had not noticed that function before.

So beautiful. Thank you for sharing these pics. What variety is planted in ground?

Eve

The variety planted in the ground (the silhouette photo) is the unknown variety I named "Pananas purple" named for the person that I got the fig from in south central Pennsylvania.   One of the other pictures shows some of the fruit ripening in a potted version of the same plant. I cut this fig back every year and protect it - the rest are in pots.

By the way, I just ate my first main crop Pananas purple fig today and wow, it was very good!   I ate several brebas earlier in the season and they were very average or below average in flavor.   I really appreciated the stark contrast in quality.   I think that having a warmer summer is helping the flavor a lot!
