Fig Cuttings in water

Hi, I experimented with 2 fig cuttings placed in water. (In water since the beginning of November)

They have a few roots and the leaves are growing.

This is my first time. Any suggestions as to how I transplant it, without disturbing its growth?

Thanks

Here are some pics of a precious water-rooted fig (KB) twigs.

KB is a very bad rooter; even an air-layer was a tough cookie!
Roots came up above the water surface ?!.
Currently potted in 1:1:1  potting-soil/ perlite/oil-dry.
Hope that at least one makes it.
I hear that water-roots are different from soil-roots (our Dr Al).

Hi Gorgi,

What kind of fig is KB?

Were there any roots under the water?  I've noticed in other photos of water-rooted cuttings, the thickest roots are at/just above the water line.  I'm wondering if those roots are more like regular roots instead of water roots and if they do best sprouting from the water line because there's air at that point and they can breathe.  Don't know if that makes any sense.

Has anyone else noticed this?

KB = Kalamata Black.

I lost mine last winter; and got some new cuttings from a fig friend.
No rot/roots under water...

Thanks Gorgi,

noss

As long as they are above the water and never touched it then they shouldn't have grown into water roots. You can tell by the amount of root hairs or the presence of any, water don't need root hair to absorb water since they surrounded by it. Maybe those roots grow above the water line because the cup being covered allow moisture to stay in the air inside.

Aha!  You are probably right about that, AFB.

Yes, air moisture (above water surface) probably had a lot to

do with it. Note my fist pic above; a plastic container "domed"
with a "clear" cup matching the container-mouth.
Some holes (6 in all), were punctured in that cup
to produce some venting...

I bump this post up for those who have not seen it.

question regarding water rooting.. does it have to be near the sunny window? or can it be done on kitchen counter or somewhere it never see the sun?

pete

I personally think it helps but not an east or south facing window mine seem to work best in a west facing window.
