Fig cuttings progress 2013

The cuttings I started, Longue D'Aout, Col de Dame Noir, Grise are making good progress with secondary roots forming.

Do the roots stay that color? Those are beautiful. Whats the mix you're using, also, why the blue cup?

Congratulations!  Hope they bear abundantly for you!

As the roots mature they sort of change to a dark yellow/orange color, but I imagine as they get larger they turn darker like the bark on the fig tree.  I started using a soil mix with perlite and sifted pine bark material that I run through 1/2 in screen mesh.  I initially used it for potting citrus so I thought I would try it on cuttings.  I don't think I will go back to using perlite/vermiculite mix.  It worked great for me last year too.  I use the blue cups because I just thought that roots would not normally develop exposed to light and if you finally expose them to sun light you really have to protect the ones on the edge of the plastic from the sun anyway.

Hi, Tom. How do you make your holes on the side of the cups? Do you use a drill?

I heated up a metal rod I had with a butane torch and melted the holes in the cups.  You can do a couple at a time before you have to reheat the metal.  I have also heated the tip of a phillips screw driver.  Make sure to where gloves and eye protection if you try it.

I use a 1/4 drill on mine

Soldering iron, works best for me.

Tom thanks for taking the time showing us what your doing they look nice.
Sore shoulder you must have been moving lots of snow ?

Thanks for taking the time in showing how you do your figs. Love the taste testing and viewing of the figs when rip videos. If you could do a " how to water cuttings" video that shows your technique it would be most helpful as over watering and under watering seems to be a critical problem with cuttings.  Showing what to look for in leaf condition and soil condition is key to learning and I think seeing a video explaining it thoroughly would really help. Does your watering technique help prevent fungus gnats? Again, thank you for making these great videos.  Big Fan!

hi Since youve been growing figs for so long, have you tried using gritty mixes or the 5-1-1?
whats your experience and thoughts on that mix for growing these figs?

I am using something like a 5-1-1 mix now with the cuttings.  I used sifted pine bark which went through 1/2 in mesh.  This will be the second year I will not be using perlite and vermiculite.  I have a Sals Corleone fig in some Turface that dries out quickly and I think has stunted the plant.  I will be repotting that one this spring into some garden soil instead.

They look beautiful, best luck and lots of fogs :)

What's your percentage on your soil?

Tom...nice job...I always enjoy your videos...good luck with the little trees.
