Fig cuttings update from 10 days ago.

Got some advice from this forum and from a couple people in my general area in Texas. So far cuttings seem to progressing well. Most have leafed out. Just added last three yesterday which were rooting more slowly. For now I have them covered inside under a light and air out daily. I mist lightly whenever soil/perlite mixture seems a bit dry, I avoid getting leaves wet. I think I'm getting further along than the last time I tried and lost all the cuttings. Any tips going forward would be greatly appreciated!

Cardinal rule is just keep them moist and not wet for long periods when the roots and leaves are a few. More leaves and more roots help transpiration that helps avoid soil staying soggy for too long.

It is very tricky to see soil moisture level by naked eye, Just slightly higher moisture level, mold will eat/kill young roots and rotten cuttings.

I use 3 - 1 meter, It seems work well, I think that you can buy it from nursery for less than 10 dollars, or If you don't mind to wait, I bought it from Chinese website for $5 shipping included.

I live in area with wet winter soils, I guess that it is very high mold spore counts, By using this 3 in 1 meter, I will stay away from those cheaper bag soils, they are too wet, I like Pro-max soil, It costs more but it is well worth for me, It is extremely hard to buy cuttings here.

I tried rooting with pure perlite, It must screen out those perlite's fine, they are mold heaven, It killed most of my cuttings.

I tried rooting with coconut coir, It works quite well for me due to its anti-mold ability, it is quite acid and mold hate it, Although it was badly molded on top layer of coir , inside of cup, no mold at all with many air pockets and roots love it.

good luck, my friend, hope to see all baby fig trees growing fast.

Thanks OttawanZ5 and ricky! I have 9 cuttings I took from my Dad's fig trees. I've been told by a few people to try planting one in the ground outside, the rest I was going to start taking out of makeshift greenhouse and see how they do. I'll definitely look into the 3-1 meter. Also, few people have mentioned pro-max soil. Where is best place to get it? I've tried Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart...I guess check the local nurseries?

I think 'ProMax' was a typo and people are referring to Pro-Mix.  Lowes has it on their website but no longer carries it in my local stores.  The nursery/garden centers do have it.

Unfortunately the Pro Mix HP is $25 on Lowe's website and I ended up having to buy Pro Mix BP (retains more water according to forum members) at $40.  Oh well, it goes far.  I mix it with perlite and pine bark fines.

Thanks Andrew. Yes, I realized it was supposed to Pro-Mix but couldn't find it other than ordering it online. I haven't had chance to check local nurseries but will try calling around and check.
