Fig Delight

Picked about 40 total today el sals and hardy chicago. Have not had rain in 10 days and was watering both plants with rain water i save in gallon jugs each plant recieved same amount of water, when i was picking the fruit i noticed sals tree had several that split at the eye. Hardy chicago no splits.
Hardy chicago i still like better and the taste now is terrific for me , sals was sweet and good.
Enjoy

They look delicious. Thanks for teasing... we've been very cold the past 3 days, and now it's raining heavily and it was only 60 for the high today.
I'm hoping it warm up again and I can have some more figs.

They look beautifull martin, good for you, our pennsylvania weather is COLD, I had to turn heat today, I am glad you had some good ripe figs.  Ciao

I am envious in the other colder zone 5 but happy for you. Enjoy.
I always thought that I like dark/black figs like you do but now really I like more the ones that ripen (before frost) irrespective of the colour. See, how realities changes your choices/favourites.

Martin very nice harvest congrats. I could see myself taking some of those and stuffing with goat cheese wrap in prosciutto and grilling for 1-2 minutes Oh My

Darn I forgot I cleaned PC  screen now my mouth tastes like Windex, to early for wine to wash out my mouth
Bon Appetite
Sal

beautiful. i wonder how well that fig would do in florida's heat.

Papayamon where do you live My young trees did not go dormant last year but I hope they will adapt this year. May I suggest you insert your zone and State in signature go to control panel and insert in signature

Ottawan,
yes i understand whatever type works for you in your zone. Do you grower either of those 2 and if so do they perform for you.
September has been a rather decent month unlike August when figs usually are coming in for me because July/August is the warm months but this year was not the case it was a cold 2 months with cool nights.  September is turning out to be about 80 each day no rain as i mentioned  this month and figs just took off now.
Ottawan, i hear but cannot validate ronde de bordeaux and  pastiliere are suppose to be early ripe type plants i have them and in coming years i will see how they perform and report.
I know from reading here on forum many Canadian growers have the breba crop fig i think called Desert King if im not mistaken, im trying santa cruz dark which is supposedly san pedro type breba crop rated a 9 probably in a warmer zone than mine im sure and main crop needs pollination. I obtained the scion from ucdavis last season by mistake and next season i will report if i get a breba crop to ripen and not fall how they taste for the first season.

Papayamon
i could not tell you how they would actually do in your climate, growing in Florida would be completetly new to me as i grew up here used to getting real cold feet , hands and shivering in our winters and the dreaded 4 letter word SNOW! What comes to mind though if i was there would be a Madeira and Panache fig plant for starters as they need long growing season.
One day we may move to that state and if so would be a whole new experience for me.
Maggie i turned heat on once and could of several other times as kids were complaing its cold some mornings, sure saved a lot on electricity though this season not turning AC on much.
Sal, its hard to imagine for me a tree not going dormant, heck all trees here go dormant, its rather blah looking at all the bare street trees in winter , i remember my first trip to Florida and seeing a palm tree for the first time with my own eyes and the beautiful flowers people grew unbeliveable it felt like i was in paradise.

Thats an excellent harvest & beautiful pictures. Even my son tells me they look delicious & whether I have them. I picked 2 Black Jack yesterday and one was spoilt & the other does not taste like a keeper. We had over a week of rain with cold nights. Thankfully the forecast now for the next few days is  sunny like summer as I have quite a main crop that is ripening.

martin what's truly amazing about florida is how fast the climate changes over such a small geographic area. i can grow things here in gainesville i could never hope to grow 120 miles further south in tampa. this is about the best of all worlds for me. here i can still grow citrus, but i can also grow a lot of other crops that need 400 chill hours.

Martin last year the trees were brought from NY in July wrapped in soil in a wet towel and plastic bag which my Uncle placed in fridge the day B-4 I flew home. I potted in big pots right away which I was told not to do. Also not knowing any better I started to fertilize with MG and kept them watered, well they took off and gave me some figs in Jan so really I had 3 crops this year but not many ripe ones at any given time I think they will adjust this year. They can surely use the rest.
