Fig Demise

I wrote in a previous post that my unknown and Hardy Chicago weren't doing so hot. You guys gave me awesome advice. So in the proces of saving those my, Panache and Violet Bordeaux didn't make it. What really gets me is that they were established trees that I ordered. They were both green a few days ago. I was able to make a cutting of the VdB (wish me luck) but no such luck from the Panache. I left the smaller pieces with the roots in a pot.. Sigh...

if they were established trees and the roots are alive it will resprout.

How long have you had them planted? Could this just be transplant shock? I agree, if the roots are good just keep taking care of them and they should regrow.

They have been planted since Jan. I will keep my fingers crossed for re sprouting. But I think the Panache is a goner..

Last year my peters honey died back completely but life slowly began to emerge by the end of summer. Good luck.

Well tell us what happened, show us photos and see if we can help.  Figs are amazing and can often come back.

I will try to post pics tomorrow..

Smaritza,

Don't get discouraged.  We all have our failures and successes, it is all part of the learning process.

About 18 months ago a friend gave me my pick of a number of potted trees he was getting rid of.  One was a dried out dead looking stick in a 3 gallon pot marked "atreano."

That little stick just sat in it's pot, all dead looking for nearly six months.   I kept it moist and, sure enough, it came back from the roots.   It is now a three foot healthy looking little in-ground tree and is growing gangbusters in our hot June weather.

Several years ago I gave up on a bunch of cuttings and threw them in my compost pile.   Many of them rooted.

Never give up on a fig tree.  They can suprise you.

Last year I planted a Peter's Honey fig tree.  It was about 21/2 - 3 feet tall.  Then this spring, it looked dead.  It was a dry brittle stick with no leaves.  I was so disappointed.  I tried to bend it and it would snap off.  So I started to dig it up to throw away and at the very bottom was one tiny leaf!  So I cut off any dead wood and now my plant looks great.  It's small but alive.  So don't give up!!

I'm still hoping for my Sicilian Brown. So far after cutting it way down , sealing the top , I'm still hopeful that it might grow form the roots.  Unfortunately I did not take any cuttings last fall . :((

The two plants in the fabric pots are the trees in question. I replanted them they came in tree pots with great roots. I used miracle grow potting mix. I set them outside in May. I tried not to over water. But I think they were root bound and I didn't loosen them up. I fertilized them each week when it got warmer. They didn't do anything, but began dying at the top. I checked for green and they were, so I cut from the top and sealed it with glue. I cut them all they way down because they were drying again. That' how I left them at this point. So I will have faith.

Miracle grow potting mix holds way too much water.  Try ultimate potting mix or Pro mix HP with or without mycorrhizae

Next time I will stick with Promix. I've used it in the past. I purchased it from my local hydroponic store, but it closed. I was too cheap to pay for postage on amazon. I won't be on my next planting go round.
You guys have given me hope. Perhaps something will sprout

@rcantor thanks for the link. I checked it out and it's out of stock at the few Lowe's closest to me. LOL!

Thanks for that link rcantor.  I've been using MG potting soil, haven't had too much trouble.. have had to water it a lot (I mixed 50/50 with perlite).  But I've been wanting to try the pro-mix hp for comparison, just couldn't find it locally. Do you mix anything with it?

Smaritza... Your lowes store should be able to special order it for you. Just go there and give them the item#.

It's not available in any Lowes or HD's in my area either - are they still supplying, I wonder?

The link is telling me it's unavailable to any store I picked within 100 miles :(

Greenhousemegastore.com has it but to ship to me was 150!!!
I will try nurseries in my area.

My Violette de Bordeaux and Panache have gone to that great big garden in the sky. So sad. I was hoping to taste the VdB this fall. If anyone has an extra VDB to share, I'll pay postage..

let see.. Paradiso Dusan is the last one to go.. Adriatic UCD.. never really cared for it. Smith, Scott's Black, Conadria Paradise Nursery.. hmm.. i'm sure there are others, but can't remember right now. too much Pilsner Urquell in me... oh yeah.. Paradiso Nero Mario. losing Paradiso Nero Mario was truly sad. i mario sent me rooted starter and cuttings twice and i lost them both. but Salce is doing great this yr. i should have cutting by next yr.
