Fig depression

I have exactly 3 figs left before the depression sets in. There is nothing in the world like a ripe fig fresh off of the tree. So my one LSU Gold and two Petite Negra will be savored and 8 months of fond memories of this years crop will be recalled. My fig failures will be cataloged and the severe drought we had in East TN will be cursed for the multitude of dropped figs from my Celeste.

I now get to make decisions on what will go into the ground this fall and to build a shelter for the 50 or so juvenile figs to winter over in. My garden has been pruned except for the figs. My Celeste will produce 15-20 nice cuttings. My in ground Brown Turkey will be replaced with I am thinking a White Marseilles. The BT has not thrived and actually is less than 3 feet tall 2 foot wide in it's third year in the ground but my Celeste is about 7 ft tall and a 8 foot spread. Same size, 1 gal at planting but the BT is just not happy here. It will be planted in an easement behind the house for the critters if it does grow.

I will fill the winter rooting my fig trimmings and growing strawberries indoors......

So has your fig depression started yet?

Hi,
The celar is full of figjam (2015 and 2016) , and I made jam this last monday. I had to trash some fruits that were left over because no one dared to eat them - One still has to try to stay fit some.
I'm now afraid to go to the garden and get back with another bucket of 3 kg of figs (6 pounds) .
But I need to go fetch some turnips as it is the season for them ... Well I'll fetch the figs too ... no other choice :) ...
And moreover it has been raining the whole week and the dirt is muddy - no fun for the shoes ...
Winter is almost here and hopefully will soon send the trees to snooze ... LOL.

all sounds great have fun and good luck

Must be great to have SURPLUS figs........I wish!

Despite the unpredictable outcome of ripened figs this time of year, I still look for the positives.  I enjoy planning the sculpture of pruning once the leaves have fallen off.  I also do not mind the process of up-potting and root pruning, maybe because I can do this in my garage where I don't have to deal with the much colder temps outside during the winter.  I try to make things enjoyable all year around with fig growing.

Cold windy rain for 2 days and forecasts of approaching frosts.  Figs have now stop ripening and are finished unless we get 1 more heat wave very unlikely.  The realities of living in the N.E. are setting in.

As I am finishing off the last basket of figs saving a plate of figs for a special dinner tomorrow.  Happy knowing the freezer is full of figs to tie us over to next summer and putting away a few bags of dried figs for the kids to munch on.
Now need to start to bring in my potted figs in and start to protect my in ground figs.

Every year I try new approaches to protecting the figs for winter.
Combination of methods that I have read suggested on this forum combined with available materials, experience...  Jdsfrance bucket method, wood boxes made from old doors and 2x4s , burying ...whatever is easiest given the specific fig shape and size.  Some of my fig trees are over 22years old so they are quite large.
Once the fig is protected from the elements they are fine to -25C until spring.  The big problem I find are the rodents.  Tree guards, hardware cloth wrapped around trunk do help a lot unless they are too loose then the rodents will squeeze in.
May need to do some additional measures for my Desert King for breba production.

The winter lasts about five minutes in TX (heard this in a movie once).
So before you know it, you're pruning and getting ready for the next season.
Time to move further south.

Oh yeah bro! It has set in for sure! Hard not to just buy all the cuttings for sale on eBay to counteract it:) Somehow in my brain if I plan on having so many more trees it will guarantee an infinite supply of fig joy! Thoughts like, "My real problem is I don't have nearly enough trees!"

Hi,
I couldn't help it. I harvested some 40 ripe figs, ate 10, and the remaining ones I stored them on the balcony in an effort to keep them cooler.
I looked through the window this morning ... Anyone a bucked of rotten figs with fig juice on the bottom ?
I'm onto something: I may use them as tricks for Halloween ... Who needs rotten eggs when you have rotten fruits...

That's too bad!  I guess the porch storing method didn't work out too well for you.  Those poor children will never come back to your house, unless they get sick and then it will be with their mothers serving you court papers lol
