Fig doodle

Old threads never die as long as the vision to complete them stays alive.  Here we go with the Fig Doodle.

One of my Valley Black recently touched the 8ft ceiling in the Winter grow room project.  Didn't ever top prune in hopes of trying this.  First thing I did was use the old cut barrel to get some base soil laid in a nice shape to conform with the wire wall.

All I could find for a support was a 9ft length of 1" PVC pipe.  Some holes were bored into cedar board stakes to hold it.

Getting this beast out of the room was no easy chore but here it is laid on the base soil. Piled a little more soil on and kind of formed a dent that would fit the grow bag shape, then laid it on.

Formed a 3ft diameter, 2ft tall wire wall out of 2" x 4" welded wire, cut some sections to fit over the stem, laid it on and fastened the wire that was cut back together with zip ties under the stem.  Then laid landscape cloth inside.

Filled most of the way with a mix of yard soil, compost and a little potting mix I had in some pots and buckets.  Watered in and will cover with some kind of mulch.  I'm going to treat this just like a compost pile and just add stuff to the top as it becomes available.  Can attach the 2ft extension that was removed from the 4ft tall fence material used if needed.

Used some hay rope and tied it around, not too tight.  It lays on pretty good.  Tip bent from growing into the ceiling.  I'll let it get to the end of the pipe and prune it off.

Wow Charlie, that is a great idea! You always come up with great ideas when it comes to growing Figs, Hope everything works out for you, you really are an idealist!

Good Luck, Charlie. : )

well executed Charlie, I recognize that fig from your other experiment.

I expect that it will work..... I have lingering worries about the roots getting enough oxygen, but the landscape fabric is porous so that shouldn't be a problem.  Can't wait to see the results.

Charlie, i like the idea of using the welded wire for a pot. The landscaping material should allow enough oxygen for the roots but if not, the easy fix is just to poke a few holes around. Very nice!

It's like a big grow bag.  The landscape fabric is full of tiny holes so air to the roots shouldn't be an issue.  A friend shared this on facebook yesterday.
