FIG FARM

I have owned 25 acres of land in Portugal for some 12 years now.
It had been planted with many Fig trees and I have not been there for 8 years now.
I am looking for a business partner who might be interested in continuing with this project.?
Please do get in touch.

wow... 25 acres.. that's lot of figs.

You should post pictures

Welcome to the forum!  We have a few members in Portugal so you may get a response.  (Jack, she hasn't been there in 8 years  : )

Hello All,
thank you all for your lovely messages...........The picture is my Quinta.........

How much money do you boys want to invest on this fig farm?  Could be spam in your email, but it's here, so not.

I bought this farm and all is paid for...............so Money would be to
make this a viable project..............I have no idea.DO you travel to Portugal at all?

Shouldn't be too hard for you to get irrigation and cuttings.  Good luck with your little project.  We are not rich Americans here.  We are fig lovers.  Some of us might be so fig loving that we will send you cuttings for postage, but I doubt it.

Please do not PM me again.

There is at least one member on this forum from Portugal, perhaps they will chime in and be able to help you explore the true costs of the startup, and maintenance of running a fig orchard. They may be able to point you in the right direction of who might be able to help you with these, most of us do this for a hobby some have farms but a lot of us would not know what is required for you in Portugal as it may differ than in our countries.

Here in Canada out Government likes to help out farmers with such information, maybe yours will do the same if you contact them and be able to make recommendations of the best varieties for your area and weather it is good to have for fresh market, early, mid or late season, dried or a mixture of both in varying degrees.

Are you planning to put livestock on your farm as well?  I know in Spain there are varieties that are used for feed for animals but not appreciated for humans and this could be another option for shelter trees who them along with Portugese oak.

I hope I didn't mis understand what you have done at your farm, Olive trees are very nice as well so you can have your own olive oil if you can muscle the work.

I wish you luck in finding investors and hope you have (and post pictures) success in your farm.

If your 'Quinta' with those 25 acres is in the right place, you shall have no problem in finding various alternatives from where to choose the best
The timing is perfect now. Can you show the precise location ??
Good luck
Francisco

Liza,
I think you can mitigate some of the skepticism and cynicism by sharing pictures of the property, then and now. Maybe even the irrigation system, water pump with a bore hole, a generator room, and images of the 2,000 fig plants. Even better, share an image from Google maps maybe with a few latitude and longitude marker outlining the property in Potugual. Is there an address?

Hello JD,
thanks for your input,Francisco has the contact name and knows the area of the Farm. I will attempt to add pictures........

Hi Liza,

Spoke to Antonio to try and set up a visit to your land.
He was very cooperative and ready to help .

I shall know the exact Lat/Long of the place later, hopefully by tomorrow.

Meanwhile for those in need of knowing the whereabouts of the farm I must say that the nearest village, São Martinho das Amoreiras is:   37º 39' 06.41" N - 08º 24' 03.76 W
As I am told the farm is approx 4km from the village.

If I find some spare time next Monday  or Tuesday I shall talk to Antonio for a visit to the place.

Ahhhhhhhhhh Bullet08,
I was hoping that is what you had meant.,I had plans for just that , I wanted all those years ago to make up log cabins for tourism, even campers would have been welcome. However a tragedy occurred in my family and I lost momentum . I am now ready to continue.............
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS>>>>>>>>>
Thanks for the good thoughts.........x

You need a good kitchen and chef.  And cuttings and plants to buy.  Sign me up!

Liza, do you still live somewhere in Portugal?

I imagine that before resuming commercial production it would be wise to analyze the market outlets for figs.  I suspect that lampo has some idea of that or others that can help.  I'm glad to read that you have problems behind you and now looking to make progress.  I wish you success!

I have a farm in California and am just now starting to plant more figs than I can eat by myself with the expectation of assessing marketing opportunities.  I will start small, maybe 100-150 trees, just to see if it is worthwhile to pursue something more.  I want to keep it small enough to still be fun but maybe my son will one day chose to expand further.

Dear Harvey,
Do you have any pictures of your Fig orchard? This is a lovely Forum were we are all meeting........and sharing Knowledge and advice.

Yes Lampo is helping as we type.........I am so happy now that I am being taken seriously.
I am not really a tehci...........My Son John is always there to help as he did by resizing my pictures.I live in LOndon with my 3 Sons, bringing them up since my Husband died of cancer some 8 years now.

I love to grow.............and FIGS are my passion, hence buying a ready made Fig Farm.,I have an allotment at the moment with 6 varities in pots at the moment, only about 10 plants in all. I started to collect again just last year.
I just want 'The Dream ' to continue...........and it will because my passion has reawakened.
I thought that I might need a Business Partner ,but where there is a will.............
