fig fence / tips trimmed

Another video from figs in Japan, here as a little hedge.

freeze the image 0:00, 0:36  and 0:45(could it be to rippen the fruit, or to keep it small?)

after min 1;00 is about other fruits...

This is so close to my idea of how I want to plant my newbies in front of my house, where I have the most sun exposure.

Grasa,
Are those wuhan figs? They look red like wuhan figs.
I would love to know if anyone has ever had a wuhan. Wonder how they taste??

have no idea what those figs are...they look good to me!

Very nice, Grasa.  Thank you for sharing that.

I notice the fig trees all look like new growth.  Do you suppose it's a new planting...or do they perhaps cut them back to the ground every year and start over?

First I would think that they prune the tips to speed the ripening of the figs and second to keep them within reach. It also probable makes for larger figs. I think I read somewhere that in Japan size is everything.

Search for "Japanese fig espalier" on this website there is a lot of information, instructions and pictures, on this pruning method. See attached link as an example. The vertical limbs are pruned yearly, the horizontal limbs are the "main trunk". If the fig tree is a breba type, you could prune alternate vertical limbs yearly.

Note the size of the trunk, and that it is "in ground."  I am glad you posted this because my goal is to grow all "in ground."

Very nice tutorial!
