Hello all, My name is Art and I live in Western Pa., I've been reading this awesome forum for a while now. I ate my first fresh fig last year about this time and been hooked ever since. I have 19 trees already ranging from 1 ft. to about 6 ft., plus i have 6 cuttings that have rooted but not put in soil yet. My wife thinks I'm crazy but she sure loves to eat them. I mostly have unknown italian varieties that look like hardy chicago. My white fig plants haven't fruited yet but the the mother plant is loaded and taste great. I already gave my wife my wish list for Christmas. Can't wait.

Wait till you have about 100, 150 or 200 varieties like most of us have.
Then they will begin to wonder.

Welcome Art. That is similar to my beginning but I only have 15 trees so far.

The nice thing is I live near an Italian community and have access to a bunch of trees for cuttings. I've been pretty successful so far with my cuttings. But I wish i had waited a couple months.  Looks like i will growing under lights this winter.

There is hope.  My wife thought I was crazy too until she tried one of the fresh figs off our tree.   I have found there to be some very knowledgeable people on this forum who are willing to help.  Welcome!

     I'll bet you know this already. About a hundred years ago a bunch of immigrants started to come over from a little village named San Pietro Avellana in Abruzzi. Many came to the area around Youngstown, including New Castle. You probably know some of my distant cousins. Welcome to the fig dimension.

Ellwood City for sure. A fellow out in San Diego runs a website for descendants of San Pietrese immigrants. I think his mother was from Beaver Falls. Somehow Somebody got a railroad job and then everyone got hired and they just followed the rails to Akron, Cleveland and points west to Colorado and then California.

It is entirely possible. The tree in her mom's yard here in Pittsburgh started out up there. I live in an Italian section of the city and have found four trees within a block of me I'm hoping to ID and take cuttings from soon!

Aaron, I know of 30+ people that have figs
around me. Mostly the same varieties I think.
I know of 3 trees in ground that are unprotected.
They look similiar to my Hardy Chicago. The trees
die back in the winter, but grow close to 10 ft
each year. I have starts to all of them.
