Fig Fiesta 2014

Gloria,  maybe in 2020. ;-))

Just under 4 weeks away.

Any vacancies left? I have not registered yet! Wow.

I signed up. I had to hold out because I had learned that we would be throwing a party for my parents that same day [it's 60th anniversary of their first date; they got married by the end of that year].
They have insisted that their party can be in the late afternoon, so I'm all set to attend both. And, I'll bring olives again.

There is still room.

Maxwell Norton, Farm Advisor & County Director, UC Cooperative Extension from the commercial fig growing area of CA will be joining us at the Fiesta, with information and insight into the commercial fig production in CA.

I'm flying out to San Diego in a couple of days, I reserved the spots but are we suppose to just show up? or are we suppose to get some sort of tickets to come to the Fig Fiesta?

last year was just show up. I assume this year would be the same.

Actually last year and this year are "let me know you are coming, pay, and then come on down." ;-))

Several attendees had last minute medical, job and family matters interfere with attendance, but we still had 26 people. Some came last year, and some were brand new to figs this year, so it was a nice mix. Informative talks from Maxwell Norton, UCCE Ag advisor in the fig growing areas of CA and Howard Garrison from USDA/UC Davis. For tasting, we had Zidi, 326-1, Native de Agentile, 291, Yellow Neeches, 309-B-1, Verdal Longue, 333-1, Col de Dame, 160-50, Adriatic, 135-4s, White Ischia, and some others from WEO, plus Black Mission NL, Vista. Other people brought Panache, Reverse, Kadota, Long Yellow, Col de Dame, Strawberry Verte, Samoa Sunshine, and more.

when do we see some pictures? ;)

What was the overall feedback on Zidi at the festival?

Igor already reported that it was one of his favorites.  How about others?

I wish I could be there!

one of these days,,,,,,,,,,,,

Harvey,

Zidi was everyone's favorite at the Fiesta followed I think by Yellow Neeches. This was an informal feedback. I happened to be sitting near the figs and listened to the comments.

The one fig that absolutely floored me was the Capri Q that Jon brought back from USDA orchard in Davis. I had no idea it was an edible caprifig. Its pulp was a beautiful deep red and had a great taste! As I said I was floored.

Sue

Downside of Yellow Neeches is that is is so small, but it really packs a flavor punch.

Sucrette! It was awesome, I fall in love!
If anybody has a 1 gal /airlayer for sale/trade, please drop me a PM.

Igor, was it the Sucrette from Pons or from UCD?  My understanding is that they are not the same.  All the figs you photographed look fantastic!

Zidi  is Good, I had 3 figs this year, and I was impressed.....I live in the foothills and I don't believe the fig wasp was involved.

That I do not know, sorry. Jon might though.

Armando,
I believe that without the magic wasp would be no Zidi for you.

Zidi is a Smyrna type and it's very unlikely those fruits would persist without caprification.

There have been various reports about Zidi, including some who get figs occasionally without the wasp. Last year I had a 2-3 (?) mature on mine (2 yr tree), but this year, none on the larger plant - they formed, but all fell off. And only 1 got ripe on the smaller tree. Not worth the trouble.

OK...LOL   I will rename my Zidi Fig to "Zorro Fig" it is similar to Zidi but better...LOL

Sucrette was from USDA/UC Davis.

We also had Capri Q
