Fig Fiesta

Yes, I made it to the fiesta and also back home....left home at 9pm Friday night, drove 490 miles, and got back home 3:40am Sunday morning without any mishaps. Time for bed!

Had a great time visiting with friends, old and new.  And the figs were nice to share.  Nice to see the "fig widow" more than just tolerates Jon's endeavor! :)

Thanks Jon and his better half for organizing and hosting a great event. Lots of great figs to taste, great food, great discussions. Too bad I am not heading straight home, or I would have bid on a few trees.

There were lots of good fig-related foods too. For example, Harvey's fig cake was delicious and the home made fig ice cream that Sue Vanderveen (svanessa) brought was incredible!

Pictures ?

Jon,

Thanks to you and Trudy for creating such a fun fig day! Thanks to those who brought taste treats too! It was great to meet so many I've only communicate with on the forum as well as again seeing the 'locals'. Lunch was excellent and taste-testing so many varieties of fig was an eye-opener.

It was Paul's idea to make ice cream, great idea Paul! The hot, humid weather demanded it! ;-) Several asked for the recipe, it's here (I added chopped walnuts to one batch which made it the favorite): http://www.tastespotting.com/features/fresh-fig-ice-cream-recipe.

I also made the goat cheese cake I mentioned on the previous page. Several wanted this recipe too. It's here: http://www.mybestdaysever.com/goat%e2%80%99s-cheese-cake-with-figs-and-honey/. Try it, you will LOVE it!

Will be posting many pics soon.....will be back home monday and will post then. Thanks Jon for hosting a great event my friend Rodney and I ate to many figs...LoL....We had a great time and made new friends.....hope to make it again next year.....hi John..Paul...Sue...Jack..Eric and all the new friends....I made.

Thanks to Jon and his wife for hosting this fun and educational event. It was great to meet such a nice and enthusiastic group of fellow fig lovers. The tasting and the dessert table were the highlights for our family. It is always exciting to find new favorite varieties to begin the search for cuttings! Thanks Sue for posting the link to your excellent cheesecake. Harvey, can you post the recipe for your fig upside-down cake?

I'm with Martin, where are the pictures? Nobody there had a camera? A video would be even better!

The ice cream with nuts was gone before I made it to dessert but no problem, I wanted it without nuts anyways and it was great!

Tami, here is a Jurupa I brought

Honestly, I thought my Jurupa always had an amber pulp.  Can't keep track in my head, I guess!

Be careful of a man wielding a knife! :)

By the way, two newbies present are named Herman!  Looks I'm still the only Harvey figaholic.

Here are a few photos from me.
-Jon is reading the fig leaves  :)  The corner of a jungle left of Jon that is where his figs live. Many people went in, I don't remember them coming out ...
-a beauty from inside
-184-15 figs cut in 1/4
-at the end I asked Jon if I could bring my wife a few figs from our feast.
The plate is what she had for dinner as a desert last night !

Awesome pix everybody!

That last one with the plate full of figaliciousness damn near brought tears to my eyes!

First of all, my thanks to Jon and Trudy for hosting the Fig Fiesta yesterday!    Others have posted about all the fig delights, which were indeed tasty.  Not to go unmentioned though was the luncheon buffet of Mexican dishes.  Wow was that good Mexican food…!

A walk in Jon’s nursery is was an experience to be savored, so I posted a few photos of his fig Shangri-La.   I couldn’t help but think, what a great place for a nap on this hot sweltering day, ha, ha.  It was a delight to meet so many of the forum folks whose post I have followed.   Thanks to the experience members, like Harvey, Sue, Frank, Igor and others for sharing their fig wisdom.   Best of all, we dissected and consumed more figs than imagined.  For this relative newbie, after looking at pictures, reading postings, blah, blah, it was super to finally taste the figs people rave about.

Added bonus, I got expert confirmation on a couple of the mystery figs, which I’ve been trying to label.   One a Brown Turkey and the other a Mission…..!   Yea……… :-)

Thanks again for the terrific Fiesta Jon.  Happy figging to all……

So, did you guys learn that FMV means nothing in the world of figs?

The reason I ask is because as many folks are so concerned about FMV.

In the pic with Jon holding the knife, who's who?

Who all showed up?

Dennis, I forgot most of the names.  Maybe I'll remember better after getting more sleep. :)

That's easy, Jon is holding the knife, not the other way around.

We had 23 people, if I counted correctly, including a very cute girl named Naomi, 5 years old and who ate more figs that the adults. I did learn that there was nobody there that i could take to Davis, because they weren't up to the challenge of sampling 200-250 figs in a day.

On a technical note, I need to hear frfom the people that brought plants for the raffle. I did not get complete information. Thanx.

Rest easy, Dennis, we talked about FMV.

Jon,
What do you want to know about the plants?

The olives I brought were purchased 'fresh' [raw] from greatolives.com and cured

Currently they have fresh olives for sale:

https://www.greatolives.com/buy-gourmet-olives/index.php?route=product/category&path=38

Currently they have several sizes of the Sevillano olives for sale. Later [probably a few days], they'll have Manzanillo and Lucques olives.

PS Jon , you never asked me if I could handle 200-250 figs on a Davis day...in fact I'll be there tomorrow right after I land in Sacramento!

Greenfig, just want to know who donated what. I know who 'got" what.

Well, I'm glad it was a success! I knew it be. I'm glad the FMV topic was discussed. Let me know when you're ready to go back to UCD and drink Joe's wine. :)

Jon,

I brought the little trees started from the cutting 7 and 4 months ago. They were Excel (4), Desert King (4), LSU Gold (7), Strawberry Verte (7).
They spent most of their time outside in a partial shade (morning sun - afternoon shade).

Jon,

We brought the 5 gal Strawberry Verte and Beall started from CRFG scion wood exchange cuttings.

-Jon

I brought the RdB and the Black Portuguese and two others that I can't remember...dang CRS!

Wow, Sue, I missed seeing those.

Thanks to all who shared their adventure with words and photos. The image of the cut Unknown Pastilliere knocks my socks off.
