Fig Fiesta

I will be there. Reservations made...money on the way.

How many people are going?  [Are there any spots left?]

Paul, We can fit you in.

Cool...I'll make the arrangements.  I'm thinking I could bring some of my home-cured olives. :)

Hey, does anyone local have an electric ice cream maker they could bring [provided electricity is available]?
We could make some fig ice cream. I have seen some recipies online

The reason I say electric, is that all my family has are hand-crankers, which we love using.....however I have discovered that using a hand cranker means you get so busy operating it that you get much less time to visit/learn/share than you would otherwise.

I made the goat cheese cake mentioned on the forum a while back and it was delish. I will make it for the Fiesta unless too many desserts are already planned.

Could I air layer a lemon tree that gives fruit all the year around now? I live in Australia & it is winter now!!!!!

Citrus propagation is done by T-budding. You could buy a small tree at the nursery to use as a rootstock, and then T-bud onto it.

Here is a video about air-layering Lemon. Didn't watch it.

Issues with air-layering would be poor roots or disease prone roots.

I'm hoping to make fig ice cream for the Fig Fiesta, but due to a poor crop both for my dad [who lives 8 miles from Jon] and for me, I probably won't have enough [if any] figs for ice cream.

Could anyone [especially SD Area people] donate some figs for this? I plan on making a gallon of ice cream.
My dad will locate an electric ice cream maker [my family has only hand-crankers], but we're in need of some figs.

They can be any "fair/OK tasting" figs [a blend of varieties is fine], therefore I am surely not expecting anyone to give up their prized varieties to put into ice cream!

We've been making ice cream since I was a kid, and it's something we enjoy. [top picture, blackberry made from san diego grown berries; bottom picture, some of the batches we made during the second half of 2011....peach, mango, key lime, black currant, strawberry, etc....we've even made 'gelati di riso'...and my octogenarian parents are still involved in the process ]

I arrive in SD on Friday evening, and if possible would want to to get the figs then...because I'd make the ice cream mix the night before. Doing so allows the flavors more time to develop before the ice cream is made.

So, if anyone can donate some figs [I'll determine how much] to a good cause, please send me a private message. Thanks!

I attended a family reunion this past week, and brought some of my 2012 batch of home-cured olives. The olives were well-liked, so I will be bringing some to the Fig Fiesta. (Ain't I a stinker for using my relatives as guinea pigs?? :-) )

Just 2 weeks away.

Okay, signed up (donated) just now.  Will bring some nice trees for a silent auction.

One of those days (make it years) ... I may show up ... a very long trip for me ...

Jon,
For those who live not far from San Diego but never been there yet and are going to drive, what is the situation with parking?
Is it easy to park at the Nursery or we should find a spot on a street or else?

It is street parking, which sometimes is easy and sometimes a little crowded.

Jon, how many folks have signed up so far?  Hoping to meet a lot of folks in person for the first time.

I hope everything goes well with all of you guys and Jon.......I may go at the last minute....not sure.

I would love to go, but just checked out the flight times and cost.
Any chance you could all fly out to me?
Have a great time and enjoy!

I wish I was going.  Have a great time, everyone!

Hey guys i'm new to this forum, I would love to come to this event! Do you have any more details? I would also love to share my amazing fig omelette recipe with everyone, it's been in my family for generations xoxo

I posted this in another thread, but will post it here also.  I made my first ever fig upside-down cake.  Two, actually.  One of these is going on a 400 mile drive with me tonight to make the FF tomorrow morning (the other is staying home so that I can get a taste when I return, LOL).

Harvey I am definitely coming early  [to help set up of course!]  :^)

LOL.  You can also start your bidding early on these silent auction items! :)

Left to right: Col de Dame Noir, Shtawi (Lebanese strain, a late-season/winter variety...tree has figs on it now), Black Ischia, White Adriatic (see Jon's thread at http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=5348418).  Some or all of these should go for over $100!  Do it for the figs! ;)

I don't know if Jon wanted us to bring figs (fruit) to share or not but I just picked some this afternoon that I'm bring along.

Box on the left:
Starting on left, mostly 184-15 and 2 Sierra, a bunch of Marabout c. Smyrna (be prepared to find the dead wasp, lol!), and a bunch of Sequoia.

Box on the right (would have been more full but I used figs from this batch for the cake):
Starting on top, Panachee, then Yellow Long Neck, Jurupa, some Flanders, Vista, and Monstreuse.

Harvey made it! The figs were great. The cake was great.

It was a hot day, with a couple dozen fig friends ( I mis-typed that as fiends, at first - though that might have been a little true). Some were old friends, some brand new ones. Some were seasoned and some were newbies.

Thank you, Jon, for organizing a great event!
The best Saturday I've had in a long time.
Thank you also everybody who brought the super tasty fig food and figs! Cakes, ice cream, figs ... What else could I wish for?
Ah, yes, a great crowd of people!!

It was nice meeting you all!
