Fig for tropical areas

I'm traveling to Trinidad and tobago this week. I'm taking a Fig tree and plant it at my family's yard. I've seen a few fig trees there surviving the Tropical climate.  The Fig wil produce okay with Pruning. Fig trees dol not go dormant in the areas, so to encourage new shoots, you'll need to prune them.
I'm looking for a fig with a closed eye that can tolerate wet seasons without being spoiled.
Does chicago Hardy sounds okay?

I'm not an expert but my first thought would be a fig that does well in Florida or Hawaii, the more "tropical' areas of the US. As to what these may be I don't know. Maybe someone from these areas can offer suggestions?

Hi Bass,

If you're only taking one, you might want to try Celeste.  It is one of the better ones in Houston (sub-tropical?) climate.  It tolerates heat and humidity better than most and the closed eye keeps the fig from spoiling.  Alma and Kadota would be other good choices.  I can't really recommend a variety as being rust resistant.

All of my 'Chicago Hardy' were either mislabeled and/or haven't produced yet... so I can't speak too much about them in a tropical environment.

Have a great trip,

Bass I was wondering if that tree took and how it is doing and what variety? I'm in a similar situation with my zone. I think my trees will go dormant but to what extent and for how long is still an unknown as this is only my second season with young trees. Last year they did not go dormant so I'm hoping that they will adjust this year. My cooler months are Jan & Feb If we do get any frost it only lasts for a couple of nights which will probably do more harm since trees are not fully dormant. Any ideas or observations?

What about lsu purple?

I ended up planting a Panachee in Antigua, and Armenian, Trojano, 276-27 in Triniadad. The panachee is doing great and is producing year round. The Armenian has been stunt for 3 years did not grow at all. Trojano and the others were just planted recently.
Here's a fig tree in Tobago in the Caribbean, grown by a Syrian. Its a light green fig.

I am thinking of sending my brother in the tropics a bunch of fig variants like Marseillies VS, Dark Portuguese, LSU Golden Celeste, Vicenzo, Slocan, Hollier, Vern's BT, Conadria and LSU Gold. Thus anyone have knowledge how  their variants send to such warmer & rainy tropics performed ? Thanks.

I live in south florida and have very wet summers.  I have a 1 year LSU gold that gave me 2 large figs this year, its in a pot.  I also have a 2 year celeste that is in the ground that has a few dozen figs on it right now.
I would deffinitly try these kinds but would favor the LSU gold cause it is not a dark fig and cause of its size.  Both kinds are closed eyes.
