Fig fruit sweetness

Hi everyone. We have another question and we're hoping you can help us with again. :)
Do the colors of the figs, whether darker or lighter, play a role in its flavor or sweetness (very sweet, mild..)? Thank you.

You've started a mess now, AuntieB! Taste is a personal thing. Some will argue each side. There is no color that is ALWAYS better/worse than the other. Enjoy the journey!

Sweetness has no relationship to color.

Thank you everyone. :) I guess we'll have to try and look for both then. :)

Yes it may indeed be the king of figs according to you.
I have one and agree.
Here are pictures of mine and near Chicago -not the best place to grow figs but i grow all my figs in a  pot and i consider that cheating  - well pictures are worth a lot.

I only dare say that the darker colored figs (both skin and pulp) do have

a greater 'eye' appeal for me. Maybe my eyes are bigger than my mouth...

Martin's problem is that he is closed minded - refusing to entertain the possibility of there being a killer non-dark fig. He will never know what he is missing  from figs like White Greek, Uncle Corky's, Desert King, Narragansett, Col de Dame, and more.
I may have to post some phony figs with pictures of dark colored figs, to disguised their true green nature, and then slip- him some cuttings. ;-))  I wonder if he has Viiolette de Aragon or Catalanian Dark, or Arkansas Black yet?

Nice picture of a dark fig in your avatar Jon  ; )

I also consider figs with 'green' skin and 'red' pulp [what a color contrast!]

very 'eye-appealing' to me ; e.g., the Paradiso fig --- yum yum...

Jon,

You mentioned Narragansett in a list of very good green figs. If I recall your (or Sue V's) description, it is green with amber pulp and the mother tree resides between Narragansett & Del Monte at the corner of Santa Barbara St.

Did you sample it this season? If so, when you have time, it would be nice to see a few photos and a brief description.

JD, prepped the photos today, but won't get them uploaded for a little ,while yet.

Yes, we sampled the main crop this summer, and it was pretty darn good. Definite keeper. Hope to get more cuttings this season - we'll see. Might have to do a "will-prune-for-cuttings" deal.

In my very short experience with figs I happen to like the dark colored ones, Im gonna try Panachee... not sure if Im going to have a single ripe fig but anyway I want to try (sorry, I like how it looks) and maybe Peters honey or battaglia (read some interesting post in the past few days about that fig) this year... but I think these wont replace my VDB or my Black mission, I just love them. But Im going to try to grow white ones anyway, one never know and maybe I find myself liking one of them over the others that I have.

Not that I have tasted a lot of white figs (unknow ID figs from a friend tree) they taste figgy like but not so sweet, maybe the ones that I tasted werent the right variety for the climate or werent fully ripe I dont know but I would gladly eat almost any fig, and a few white figs are better than no fig at all ^_^  but if I were to plant my first fig tree I would chose a dark colored variety to start with.

The difference is that black figs ,can be close to best they can be even if tho ,the conditions,(climatic),are not ideal in a random Summer.
The light,White varieties, will not ripe so readily in adverse climatic conditions,so that is why, we most people living outside ,ideal climatic condition circle, like better dark varieties.

But Herman those atreano and jh Adriatic I tried with you were some the best figs I have ever had and we had a terable summer. Are you saying that if we have a nice summer next year they will be even better?

I have no doubt the next Summer the fruits will be better tasting.
There is no way that next Summer will be as bad as last,so i have no doubt it will.

So let's have a list of the best of the best light figs.  Let's stick to ones that will yield in containers to keep it most widely applicable.  :)
