Bullet08, thanks for the answer; Pierre baud is well known as figtree seller in France.
I hope getting also answers from fig fans.

Bernie

and if I had the money and enough place for the trees, I would buy half of his nursery!

Bernie

Seems like a month or so ago I was chatting with a member from france. Said he wasn't far from Caromb hope I spelled that right.

if i had money, i would get all the license and import all of his trees :) along with pon's collection and most of jon's.

Garden whisperer, there is a french fig variety called "Noire de Caromb";
Caromb is a small town in the south of France, well known for her fig variety.
If one day I go there, I'll bring back the variety.

Bullet 08, I hope after buying all the licences, you will let me some trees available?

Bernie

Dave,

could find out the member's name of the french member you were chatting with?
I'll be glad to contact him.

Bernie

bernie, if i had money, sure why not. i'll pay for your import license too :) Noire de Caromb is known to be a good fig... just that getting one around here is not too easy. i had one that was sourced from baud, and i killed it during rooting.

My wife's from France, but we live in Texas.  I'm trying to convince her to bring back some cuttings when she goes visits Provence next month.

Hi,
I've been growing a fig tree in my garden in the eastern suburbs of Paris. This year's first crop is looking good, except it's taking forever to mature because of the very cold spring we've had.
My fig tree spent 10 years sitting in a pot on a balcony in inner-city paris. When I took it out of the pot a few years ago there was no soil left, only roots. It has recovered very nicely, and measures over 3 metres now. I'm not sure what variety it is, possibly Sultane.

James,

the visit of your wife to France sounds very interesting...

Bernie

Ancolie,

is your tree now on the parisian ground?

Bernie

Pete,

I'll be glad to receive a licence from you!

Bernie

been to paris twice. one in france, not the one in texas :) lovely place, and lovely people. it wasn't at all like what i heard about. people were very willing to speak english. and food was great. but sadly very limited choice in beer. my wife enjoys wine, so she was fine. i needed beer. london had much better choice for beer, but the food was lacking. that was before i started growing figs.

Hi Bernie, yes the fig tree is now in the ground. I don't live in inner-city Paris (intra-muros) but in the suburbs east of Paris. The area is called Marne-la-Vallée. I live in an apartment block on the ground floor, and I planted the fig right against the wall, which is a good thing because the wall keeps it warm, but possibly unwise because of the risk of root damage to the building. The wall faces south-west.

Pete - That's what the Chunnel is for.

I see so many variations on the fig and goat cheese theme. I am wondering if the French prepare figs differently than other cultures.

Ancolie, , I have 4 fig trees growing in a similar situation as yours. The trees are in a protected courtyard planted near brick and block walls where they absorb the heat and protected from harsh winds and low temps. So far after several years the building foundations seem to be unaffected. The trees are in a mini climate and thrive. Bernie, that tree sounds like a winner.

Dale, You can get goat cheese at Costco and I believe Trader Vic's? (I can never remember if the trader is Joe or Vic, ss)

Tami, I lived in Houston a few years as one of those displaced northerners. Never got down your way. Came back home and there is no Costco. We can still find goat cheese, though, and I live smack between Cleveland and Columbus (Ohio), each of which has Trader Joes. I was hoping for some culinary insight a la Francaise.

Costco in Columbus; YAY!!!

Son of gun, and I know right where that is.

If you are looking for goat cheese, you can find it at Wal-Mart.  I buy it all the time for salads.

but i bet they are not unpasteurized cheese that our french members can get at their country...
