I purchased a fig tree at Home Depot several (5?) years back that was labeled as a Black Mission Fig, and have yet to see a black fig on the tree. It took a couple of years to bear fruit, and this summer has prolific fruit. As in years past, I have waited for the fruit to turn black, only to watch it drop to the ground as yellowish green fruit. I assumed it had a disease of some sort, but after seeing a few dozen figs on the ground this week, I decided to determine the cause. After searching this forum, and realizing there were more than just Brown Turkey and Mission figs, I have concluded my tree is NOT a Black Mission fig. I tasted a ripened fig, which has a melon flavor, only to read further on this forum that some figs are not edible. As I haven't yet keeled over or had a violent GI reaction, I can conclude it is also edible. Now, I would like to know what it is. I'm in Augusta, GA and this tree made it through winter temperatures in the teens with little damage. Pictures below. Any ideas? Thanks for your assistance.
